Awanui Labs Timaru (previously known as Medlab South Timaru) is the provider of pathology services to the people of South Canterbury; providing pathology services to the patients of Medical Specialists, Hospital Clinicians, General Practitioners and Midwives. Awanui Labs Timaru is a part of Awanui Group (previously known as APHG), the largest network of human and veterinary diagnostics laboratories in NZ. Awanui Group has laboratories throughout the country and is committed to providing facilities and services that deliver exceptional care to its clients.


About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We’re seeking a motivated and eager individual to step into a Trainee role, or, if you’re a qualified Medical Laboratory Technician, to join our Core Laboratory. This is a permanent, part-time position of 50 hours per fortnight, (late afternoon/evening shift) and a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, develop your skills, and contribute to vital laboratory operations.


In this role, you will support the daily operations of the laboratory by performing a range of essential tasks, including demonstrating strong attention to detail and organisational skills, and maintaining a commitment to high-quality service and laboratory standards.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Barcoding, receipting, and preparing specimens as they arrive at the laboratory.

  • Entering patient and test details accurately into the system.

  • Answering telephones and handling enquiries professionally.

  • Work well under pressure and manage competing priorities.

  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and a high degree of accurate.

  • Be willing to learn new skills and adapt to changing procedures.

  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Maintain a friendly, customer-focused approach at all times.

  • Show initiative and be self-sufficient in your day-to-day tasks.

To be successful in this role you need to have:



  • A positive and friendly approach to your work.

  • Compassion for others, including a real desire to provide high-quality care to a wide variety of patients of all ages and circumstances.

  • Excellent customer service skills including a high level of personal presentation.

  • Strong attention to detail and an ability to follow processes accurately, even when under pressure.

  • Respect for always ensuring patient confidentiality and in all matters.

  • Diploma in Applied Science, or a Bachelor of Science would be an advantage, but not essential.

  • A clean New Zealand Driver’s Licence.

  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
