Job Title: Wildlife guide and driver While we are offering this as a casual position to begin with, there is likely to be an opportunity for work with us to become a permanent part-time role from spring onwards.
At Blue Penguins Pukekura we offer exception wildlife and cultural tours in the late evenings and operate our tours every day of the week. We are a Charitable Trust looking after a reserve that contains the largest colony of penguins on the Otago Peninsula. The work we have to offer is tourism based, please note; there is no hands-on work with the penguins.
We require a wildlife guide/driver to assist other staff in delivering an awesome memorable tour for up to 75 guests.
Some weekend work (as well as weekday work) will be part of this role. Most of the work occurs late afternoon and into the evening. Job role:
While your role will primarily be helping to manage the group, there is an expectation that as a wildlife guide, you will engage with visitors to answer questions they might have.
Full training on our wildlife and cultural tours will occur (including notes provided).
Working with guests from all over the world, we have a very strong culture of Health and Safety and ensuring the safety of all visitors while on our work site is the highest priority.
Use of our booking system and handling cash/credit cards and selling merchandise will also be part of the role.
Our tours are conducted outside in all weather. The successful applicant needs to be comfortable with working outside in often windy or cooler conditions. Wet weather gear will be provided. 
We need someone who is (or would be) comfortable driving a 12-seater van to bring guests from Dunedin out to our penguin colony on the Otago Peninsula. This would require the delivery of commentary along the journey. To operate our van the successful applicant would need to already have a full driver's license (and be willing to obtain a passenger endorsement license- a fairly easy process, which we would pay for). Our work site is situated at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on the end of the Otago Peninsula. 
What we are looking for:
We are looking for someone with an outgoing personality, who would make an enthusiastic guide and has a passion for wildlife and/or Māori culture. The successful applicant needs to be able to fulfil the job role described above and be a bit of a night owl as while our tours currently occur at 4pm, however, over the summer period they are scheduled to start around 9pm (with an expected return to Dunedin around 1130pm at that time of the year). Work availability: 
Work is available on a casual basis for the winter period, and it is very likely this role would become a permanent part time role starting from spring, so we are looking for someone who is staying in Dunedin for most of this upcoming summer period. If the role does become a permanent part-time role the minimum hours would likely be around 12 hours per week (That is: 2-3 nights work per week)
While our standard tour is only 90 minutes long, we pay our guides for a minimum of 4 hours each night they are employed (there is some preparation required of the site each night both pre and post-tour).
For tours that involve driving guests to our site, these are 5 or 6-hour long tours.
