Job Description - Education and Outreach Promoter (fixed term)

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ works to implement impactful awareness and educational programmes that inform the public, educate health professionals and guide the Government to significantly improve standards of prevention, treatment and care of prostate or testicular cancer (PCa or TCa) in New Zealand

This is a fixed term role ending on 20 November 2024 covering extended leave by the encumbent in the role. You will work with the Education team to provide a direct link to the community and will play a vital role in ensuring that PCFNZ is accessible and relevant to the audiences we wish to serve. 

Full training will be offered for the right person.

This role will be based with the support and education team at our offices in Albany, Auckland. Some ‘out of hours’ meetings and overnight travel may be necessary.

The broad goals of the position are to ensure that:

  • those directly at risk and their families are aware of the risk factors of prostate and testicular cancer
  • those directly affected and their families are aware of the part they can play in early detection
  • those directly affected and their families are empowered with information resources to help them make decisions around detection, treatment and survivorship
  • health professionals are aware of best practice guidelines around the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer 
  • patients and their families are aware how best to live well following a diagnosis of prostate cancer 
  • a Conference is held every year to educate our stakeholders
  • we partner meaningfully with Māori and Pasifika organisations to raise awareness of PCa and TCa amongst Māori and Pasifika communities

To achieve this we work to:

  • have an information and education presence at major public events every year
  • conduct presentations at organisations/ clubs around the country
  • have a structured programme of education and awareness sessions targeting health professionals
  • establish strategic partnerships with Māori and Pasifika health providers with a view to developing and executing significant awareness initiatives tailored and appropriate to these communities

Key duties and responsibilities:

To execute this role, the Education & Outreach Promoter will be expected:

  • to undertake health promotion events in our Education & Outreach vehicle/s to engage and inform members of the community.
  • to work with Māori & Pasifika organisations and health workers to deliver information, educate and raise awareness 
  • to deliver activities targeting health professionals that aim to improve their awareness and understanding of prostate & testicular cancer 
  • to attend awareness and education events on behalf of the charity around the country such as A&P Show’s, workplace, clubs and health expos.
  • to help deliver information forums that aim to improve patient and family awareness and understanding of prostate and testicular cancer, treatments and survivorship issues.
  • to assist with the delivery of the charity’s Education Ambassador programme  
  • to liase with our Support Co-ordinators to ensure they have the resources they require to operate in their areas.
  • To maintain processes and databases with attention to detail
  • To undertake other duties as required

You will also:

  • Be instrumental in ensuring a positive team environment.
  • Ensure Health and Safety requirements are met in all activities.
  • Develop an understanding of, and adhere to, PCFNZ’s policies and procedures, always looking at how things can be improved and making recommendations.

Skills and qualities: Essential 

  • Experience with public speaking
  • Interest in and desire to learn about and incorporate the Māori worldview in the charity’s activities
  • Full driver’s license and confident driver of vehicles 
  • Excellent IT skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, CRM, internet-based systems and comms)
  • Strong facilitation skills to collaborate with your community and other partners.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills

Skills and qualities: Desirable

  • Event management experience
  • Experience of volunteers and volunteering
  • Health professional qualification
  • Experience with older persons
  • Good organisational skills
