Awanui Labs – Otago Southland (previously known as SCL) provides high-quality diagnostic pathology services to the community, healthcare professionals and their patients. Our Oamaru Laboratory has been providing pathology services to the Otago community for more than 60 years. We recognise the importance of highly qualified staff and inspired leadership together with advanced information technology and automation to achieve service excellence.

About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We’re seeking a motivated and eager individual to step into a Medical Laboratory Technician, to join our Core Laboratory. This is a permanent, part-time position. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience, develop your skills, and contribute to vital laboratory operations.

In this role, you will support the daily operations of the laboratory by performing a range of essential tasks, including demonstrating strong attention to detail and organisational skills, and maintaining a commitment to high-quality service and laboratory standards

Key Responsibilities:



  • Perform venepuncture and collect blood and other specimens safely and accurately.

  • Conduct laboratory work, including preparing, sorting, and processing specimens.

  • Participate in on-call duties as required.

  • Accurately enter patient and test information into laboratory systems.

  • Answer telephone enquiries and assist clients professionally.

  • Manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.

  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills and maintain a high degree of accuracy.

  • Learn new skills and adapt to changes in procedures and protocols.

  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Maintain a friendly, customer-focused approach and take initiative in daily tasks.



About you | He kōrero mōu
To be successful in this role you need to have:



  • Registration with Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.

  • A current Annual or Interim Practicing Certificate.

  • A sound knowledge of laboratory operations including, safety, quality assurance processes, operation of equipment and hands-on practical experience.

  • A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment.

  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.

  • Eligible to work in New Zealand.



If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.
