We have a part-time role available in Auckland for a fun, energetic and positive person who will strive to help our Tāngata (people) with intellectual impairments to maximise their potential. 

We are on the lookout for a passionate, committed individual who is willing to work with Tāngata to support them through the social housing process to secure their own homes/or in the residential homes of the Tāngata, providing support to their aspiration to live independently in the community. Some Tāngata may have challenging behaviours, and may require minimal personal cares.

The Tāngata we support go to different activities during the day, and as such, this role may involve split shifts (early mornings/late afternoon and onward), in addition to weekend and sleepover shifts.  We require someone with full availability to work all shifts.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Te Roopu Taurima, Choice in Community Living is a community participation service providing a variety of individualised recreational, leisure, social and living skills programmes to assist people with intellectual disabilities to fully participate in their community and lead fulfilling and productive lives. 

• Provide one-on-one and group support to individuals with disabilities, promoting their social inclusion and independence.


• Facilitate community-based activities and events that enhance the personal and social development of individuals.


• Collaborate with individuals and their support networks to identify their goals, strengths, and areas for growth.


• Develop and implement person-centred plans to support individuals in achieving their desired outcomes.


• Support individuals in building and maintaining positive relationships and networks within the community.


• Advocate for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusion and equality.


• Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of services provided.

You will bring maturity, life skills and effective problem-solving skills. A commitment to tikanga Maori and the ability to incorporate this in daily work is essential.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Reliability, commitment, and a passion for working with people.


• Desire to learn on the job and study towards qualifications.


• A full New Zealand driver's license (essential).


• Ability to use the internet, Microsoft Outlook and Teams chat.


• Availability to work a Monday to Sunday roster (essential).

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience

Your skills will include:

• Experience working with individuals with disabilities, preferably in a community-based setting.


• New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, disability studies, social work, psychology, counselling (preferred, not essential).


• Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.


• Knowledge of person-centered approaches and disability rights.


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


• Empathy, patience, and a positive attitude.


• Familiarity with community activities, resources, and services.


• Basic computer skills and the ability to maintain accurate documentation.


• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application to the service.


• A commitment to helping empower the people we work with to take control of their own lives. 


• Ability to maintain confidentiality and work in a culturally sensitive manner.


• A full driver’s licence is required.
