We are recruiting an experienced part-time Payroll Officer to commence with us in a permanent capacity. 

The Payroll Officer is a sole-charge role overseeing the payroll application (Datacom) and payroll processing activities on behalf of Waikato-Tainui, being the key contact for all payroll-related queries.  You will manage between four and five payroll groups for Waikato-Tainui, ranging in frequency from weekly, fortnightly, and monthly processing schedules. The Payroll Officer will also support the completion of annual audit activities at the end of the financial year. In this role you will bring your expertise to support the development of our payroll processes, guidelines/systems and be a source of technical advice when it comes to payroll processing, calculations, and holidays legislation. 

The role will report into the People & Culture Manager and be part of the wider Operations Team who are responsible for the efficiency of systems and processes across the entire organisation. Ultimately ensuring that we have the right tools, systems, and resources to support our teams to deliver on our commitments to marae and tribal members.

 

This role will focus on:

  • The primary contact for kaimahi payroll matters, making sure you are responsive to queries treat all matters with sensitivity
  • Setting up new members in the payroll system
  • Updating existing members according to details provided for payroll (either through Governance & Legal or People and Culture Team)
  • Offboarding members in the payroll system, and processing termination pay as necessary
  • Ensuring all payroll instructions are accompanied with the correct authorisation and supporting documentation, as noted in the Waikato-Tainui Payroll Guidelines
  • Reviewing all adjustments and changes to the pay run to ensure it is correct, before processing
  • Prepare accurate pay calculations and draft pay run reports (also called Pay Authorisation Reports)
  • Developing and implementing best-practice payroll procedures and maintaining the Waikato-Tainui Payroll Guidelines document
  • Supporting the annual audit activities for the payroll function

 

Ngaa puumanawatanga oou | What you will bring

  • NZPPA Certification (At least Level 2) or at least 8+ years' experience as a payroll practitioner
  • Demonstrated extensive experience working in payroll for large organisations and/or payroll systems
  • High accuracy and attention to detail is a must
  • Strong data-entry skills and strategies to ensure no errors are made
  • Excellent knowledge of payroll legislation (Holidays Act 2003, Wages Protection Act 1983, Privacy Act 2020)
  • A general understanding of the payroll-related provisions within other Acts (e.g. Minimum Wage Act 1983, Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987, Employment Relations Act 2000, Equal Pay Act 1972, Accident Compensation Act 2001)
  • A quick-learner who is able to easily adapt to new systems and software
  • High tech-literacy and digital skills
  • Previous experience using the Datacom payroll system is preferred
  • Sound knowledge of Waikato-Tainui and proficiency or developing proficiency in te reo Maaori is desirable but not essential to the execution of this role
