Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland Tertiary Foundation Programme (TFC) is a one-year university bridging programme which teaches under-prepared young adults so they may undertake degree studies in the following year. One of the subjects taught is Mathematics which is spread over five different courses, depending on the mathematics experiences that a student enters the TFC programme with. The teaching position involves teaching bridging mathematics and statistics, where the successful candidate will teach two courses over the five months that include Semester Two 2025.

Firstly, the successful candidate will teach one stream of the course, TFC Maths 90F, at the City Campus. TFC Maths 90F covers number and its operations, proportional reasoning, measurement, and introductory algebra, to students who have not been successful in their earlier learning of mathematics. TFC Maths 90F will be offered at these times in the City Campus:

  • MON 2pm-3pm; THURS 12pm-2pm; FRI 9am-11am

The second course is TFC Statistics 92F offered in a student’s second semester of their bridging year, to prepare them for entry into the Stage One Statistics 10X suite of courses at the University. TFC Statistics 92F will be offered at these times at Te Tai Tonga (Manukau) Campus:

  • TUES 4pm-6pm; THURS 4pm-6pm.

The role will also include marking and meeting with students one-to-one. You will be part of a larger team teaching these courses, and the tests and other assessments will be written by the Course Coordinators. The ideal candidate is someone who has teaching experience in a New Zealand secondary school, and who can relate well to young adult learners and their variable prior learning experiences. The position is 0.5 FTE (half time) which includes traveling time between the two campuses.

The role is a 5-month fixed term, part-time role (20 hours per week) from July - November 2025

The remuneration is between $ 100,696 - $ 121,897 (pro-rated) per annum dependent on skills and experience.

To be considered for this role it is essential that you have a relevant postgraduate qualification in or progressing towards postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g., sciences, social sciences or IT).

  • BSc/BA or above in Mathematics or Statistics or a relevant discipline
  • Teaching qualifications -MEd/MSc or above in a relevant discipline
  • Teaching learners from a diverse range of backgrounds, learning backgrounds and abilities
  • Ability to collaboratively discuss computational and research problems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare professional documentation for various audiences, and to tailor discussions to the needs of both technical and non-technical research audiences
  • Proven outstanding organisational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritise multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain excellent attention to detail/accuracy
  • Ability to motivate, enthuse, and inspire students
  • Collegiality and ability to work well in a team
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  •  Ability to innovate and willingness to use new technology.
  •  Demonstrated innovation in learning technologies and teaching strategies
