As a data modeler, your primary responsibility will be understanding, analyzing, capturing, and maintaining business data requirements using data models. It is your responsibility to ensure that these models are consistent, aligned to the business glossary, and maintained in a way that enables impact assessments and data lineage. In addition, you will be required to collaborate with data product managers and development teams to adopt and reuse the core data model and to promote a data-driven culture.
To excel in this field, you must have a thorough understanding of business data requirements, and the ability to apply this knowledge to create effective data models. This requires a combination of technical expertise, business knowledge, and collaboration skills.
Primary Responsibilities
- Convert the data needs into concrete and scalable data structures
- Maintain data models at conceptual, logical, and physical levels to meet business and technical needs
- Review changes to the existing data models to ensure they are consistent and optimized
- Integrate data models from different sources and data domains
- Load and version data models in a centralized repository
- Establish and enforce data modeling and design standards, best practices, and data integrity rules
- Manage data lineage by linking the data model, business glossary, and physical artifacts to maintain consistent terms and definitions
- Implement data strategies and advance the data modeling competency in the bank
- Assist development teams in documenting their data implementations and mapping their lineage to the data model
- Assist data analysts in translating business rules into clear requirements and data models
- Collaborate with the Data Governance team to ensure that data is accurate and trustworthy
- Collaborate with other teams to ensure alignment between our roadmap and technical architecture
- Collaborate with tech leaders to create secure, resilient, performant, and scalable solutions to solve business and customer problems
- Perform other related tasks that may be assigned occasionally
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of data standards, principles, and best practices
- Working knowledge of data model design patterns, business intelligence tools, and analytics tools
- Working knowledge of SQL and Python
- Experience creating and maintaining data models for various data platforms (RDBMS, NoSQL, Hadoop, etc.)
- Proficient in data modeling tools and techniques (ERD, UML, dimensional modeling, data vault, etc.)
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
- Can quickly learn new technologies and data domains
- Effective with minimum supervision, works under own initiative, and executes with end-to-end focus
Education, Certifications, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Finance, Commerce, Computer Science, Information Technology, Analytics, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in data architecture, data engineering, data analysis, or data science
- Minimum of 5 years of data modeling experience with exposure to conceptual, logical, canonical, or semantic modeling
- Data modeling experience in a bank or financial service company
- Business Analysis experience in a bank or financial service company
- Understands financial and business data
- Understands different modeling notations (UML, ORM, etc.) and data schemas (JSON, XSD, XML)
