Build Better Engineer

As Instrumental’s Build Better Engineer, you will become a superuser of Instrumental technology. First, you’ll apply it to every facet of our customers’ products (and hack it if necessary) to maximize the value our customers get from Instrumental technology. You’ll use the product on their behalf, leverage discoveries to drive increased engagement with our customers, and be the expert everyone wants to get technical support from. You’ll leverage your own experience in electronics development and production to understand our customers’ goals and needs, set them up for success, and guide them to get there. Second, you’ll leverage your creativity and communication skills to engage cross-functional users to build out a library of best practices – to further support customer users in getting the most out of the platform.

This role is a unique blend of mechanical engineering know-how, treasure hunting, product evangelism, and technical communication. The Build Better Engineer will report into Customer Experience, and work closely with Sales, Customer Success, Product, and even Marketing to drive meaningful customer impact that leads to expansions.

• Be an Instrumental expert. Your first mission will be to understand Instrumental’s technology at the very deepest level – how it works and how to best apply it to solve problems for our customers. You’ll gain this expertise by doing – working across our entire customer portfolio to discover issues, root cause problems, and set-dup tests.
• Deep collaboration with users. You’ll earn our customers’ trust by collaborating deeply with teams and individuals to enable them to be successful with Instrumental technology. At a surface level, this may mean answering support and technical questions via email or phone – but at a deeper level, it will mean understanding what our customers really care about and ensuring that they get that from Instrumental.
• Drive engagement with the platform. Part of your job will be to use Instrumental on behalf of our customers – and you’ll use the discoveries you find to create learning opportunities for users to engage in the application and embed Instrumental into their daily workflows.
• Deliver Customer value. You’ll drive key metrics that lead to customers realizing value with Instrumental – such as new discoveries and intercepted units – either through customer users or directly. You will also find opportunities for users to engage in the application and embed Instrumental into their daily workflows.
• Scale and communicate best practices. You’ll work with Product Marketing and Customer Success to build documentation of best practices, trainings, and other materials that will enable users to self-service or level up the value they can get from Instrumental technology.

• Have shipped at least two electronics products through NPI and into production as a mechanical engineer, product design engineer, quality engineer, or sufficiently similar role – please highlight the specific products as part of your application and what parts you were personally responsible for.
• Demonstrated deep interest in technology and tools – you are the kind of person who has set up your own CAD role, taken competitive products apart, built something with a raspberry pi, run ChatGPT through its paces. You have only one speed, and that’s 110%.
• You are thrilled by the joy of the hunt – finding a needle in the haystack will make your day.
• You have a natural ability to engage others in written or verbal communication in a way that disarms them, even when you’re pointing out flaws in their designs or things they’ve got to fix.
• You can point to examples where people sought out your perspective or expertise because you’re a good teacher and coach.
• You are meticulous and detail-oriented, while still driving to aggressive deadlines.
• You love a good spreadsheet model.

The following is a representative annual base salary range for this position within the Bay Area: $140,000 - $155,000 with the opportunity for significant variable incentives. Job level and salary opportunities are evaluated through our interview process.
