SUMMARY
The Liaison Nurse is the key account representative and front-line support for client vessel interactions. The Liaison Nurse provides operational support to assigned vessels including but not limited to technical support, onboarding support, facilitation of the ordering and inventory in conjunction with the Inventory Management Specialist. The Liaison Nurse is also required to conduct routine House Doctor calls with their assigned vessels and report all actions and issues from the vessels. The Liaison Nurse serves as the Primary Operations Liaison for assigned vessels and is the direct point of contact for vessel command and shoreside leadership for all operational and administrative matters, coordinating clinical cases with the Telehealth Team under the supervision of the Lead Liaison Nurse and in collaboration with the Lead Telehealth Physician.
The Liaison Nurse must have strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to confidently interact with members of Senior Leadership shoreside and shipboard. The Liaison Nurse is a self-starter and able to work both independently and within a growing team. This role does not provide direct patient care but facilitates structured case coordination and operational follow-through.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
General:
• Under the direction of the Lead Liaison Nurse provides advice and guidance to all assigned vessels and supports their operations.
• Demonstrates full commitment to the VIKAND vision and goal of creating a safer and healthier onboard environment through its early intervention approach.
• Responsible for providing general day-to-day support for all assigned partners/vessels including, but not limited to, onboarding, technical issues, and house doctor calls.
• Provide excellent customer service and professional communication at all levels of an organization.
• Acts as the Primary Operations Liaison for assigned partners/vessels, ensuring structured communication, appropriate escalation, and timely resolution of operational and administrative concerns.
• Responsible for following all Vikand procedures and guidelines as directed by the Lead Liaison Nurse and Lead Telehealth Physician.
• Promotes a positive, collaborative, and respectful work environment.
Client Responsibilities:
• Utilizes communication platforms to provide high-quality support to the onboard vessel command/medical staff, including urgent and non-urgent technical requests, onboarding of new partners and vessels, monthly vessel telephone communications in accordance with flag state regulations and Vikand procedures.
• Able to clearly communicate and provide a structured approach to all communications with vessel command/medical staff including during house doctor calls.
Supports the onboarding process for new partners ensuring clear communication with each vessel and shoreside leadership throughout the process.
• Demonstrates a key understanding of the onboard operation and reports any limitations to senior members of the OneHealth team and assigned partners as required.
• Reports operational and quality issues and suggests quality improvement initiatives to help improve overall telemedicine program.
• Collaborates with the OneHealth team and suggests best practices and process improvements.
• Collaborates closely with the Telehealth team in supporting reported issues for client vessels and recommendations for improvement.
• Coordinates all reported medical cases with the OneHealth Telehealth Team, ensuring accurate information transfer, appropriate escalation, and timely follow-up communication with vessel command.
• Provides coverage to the Telehealth Team for on-call duties as required.
• Coordinates with Procurement to review vessel medical inventories and support compliance with flag state regulations, company policy, and maritime medical chest requirements.
• Assists in identifying inventory gaps expired medications, or compliance concerns and communicates findings to vessel command/onboard medical staff and OneHealth Telehealth team.
• Supports the development and dissemination of crew wellness resources and preventive health education initiatives tailored to maritime operations.
Customer Service and Communication
• Maintains positive, professional, engaging, and supportive interactions with internal and external representatives, including Vikand colleagues, individual crew members, vessel command and vessel leadership.
• Communicates and collaborates with the Lead Liaison Nurse regarding any patient or vessel specific issues, needs, requests, or concerns.
• Routinely monitors email communications for reported issues from assigned partners/vessels and provides cover to other vessels, where required. Pro-active in finding resolutions and/or escalating as appropriate.
• Able to manage various tasks for all partners simultaneously and clearly communicate necessary updates and process improvements.
• Confidently Lead routine partner meetings, providing a clear agenda prior to each meeting.
• Ensures structured documentation of vessel communication, action plans, follow-up items in accordance with Vikand operational standards.
Administrative Duties:
• Participates in Vikand training programs specific to the OneHealth program and the Nurse Liaison role.
• Adheres strictly to Vikand SOP’s
• Provides input on improvements to workflows, staffing models, and platform functionality.
• Collaborate with the Telehealth team regarding any patient or vessel specific issues, needs, requests or concerns.
• Maintain an excellent understanding and ensure compliance with HIPAA and GDPR requirements and ensures confidentiality is maintained.
• Able to provide back-up support for the Telehealth Nurse, where necessary.
• Maintains high performance standards and professional competence.
• Support any other areas of business as allocated by the Vikand leadership team.
• Maintains awareness of vessel hierarchy and maritime chain of command to ensure appropriate communication protocols with onboard leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Nursing degree
• Philippine Board-Certified Registered Nurse or equivalent
• Current ACLS certification required
• Minimum three (3) years postgraduate nursing experience required
• Strong clinical and nursing triage knowledge required
• Three (3) years’ experience in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, or Acute Care preferred.
• Minimum two (2) years shipboard experience as a Ship Nurse required.
• Telemedicine experience preferred
• Understanding of the International Convention of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)
• Familiarity with the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC)
• Familiarity with maritime regulatory bodies (e.g. CDC, Health Canada, ANVISA)
• Knowledge of HIPAA and GDPR requirements, able to recognize, understand and appropriately handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
• Fluent in English (spoken and written)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Competence in virtual consultation and telemedicine platforms
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, must have initiative to work efficiently without direction
• Compassionate, patient focused, and team orientated
• Must demonstrate excellent written/verbal interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
