Job Description - Product Designer (Metal Fabrication) - Work From Home
We are seeking a skilled Product Designer with SolidWorks expertise to develop innovative sheet metal solutions for commercial and institutional projects. This role offers the opportunity to work across the full product lifecycle, from concept design through to prototyping and installation, collaborating closely with engineering, production, and installation teams.
Design and develop new products using SolidWorks, based on rough concepts, sketches, or reference materials.
Translate ideas into detailed 3D models, assembly drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
Apply strong knowledge of metal fabrication techniques, including bending, punching, and welding, to ensure practical manufacturability.
Work closely with internal teams to gather design briefs and independently progress product development to review stages.
Present concepts and prototypes regularly for stakeholder feedback.
Adjust designs to meet construction-specific requirements, including site tolerances, building integration, and compliance standards.
Ensure products are aligned with project timelines, budgets, and manufacturing capabilities.
Produce BOMs and maintain accurate documentation throughout the design lifecycle.
Collaborate with production and installation teams to refine designs post-prototyping.
Adhere to best practices in sheet metal design for correctional facility products and commercial installations.
Other role-specific duties as they arise.
Relevant tertiary qualification in Product Design, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Proficiency in SolidWorks with a strong portfolio of metal fabrication designs.
3+ years of experience in a product design or mechanical design role within a fabrication or construction-related environment.
Deep understanding of sheet metal manufacturing processes: bending, welding, punching, assembly.
Exposure to the construction industry, particularly in developing products integrated into commercial or institutional buildings.
Ability to work independently, interpret loose briefs, provide regular progress updates.
Strong communication skills, ability to liaise effectively with engineers, production teams, and clients.
Experience working on customised products in high-compliance environments (e.g., correctional facilities) highly advantageous.
