About the role:
You have an opportunity to join an exciting greenfield project at the heart of our business as a Mid Backend Developer, where your work will have a direct and lasting impact. You’ll help build a modern technology stack from the ground up for a hybrid insurance carrier, tackling complex, large-scale data challenges and shaping foundational systems that will support years of growth. You’ll have the chance to become a domain expert, take on leadership responsibilities, and contribute to Hippo's business-critical, fast-growing insurtech venture. You’ll collaborate with an experienced team, influence architecture decisions, and play a key role in preparing the platform for dynamic, long-term growth.
What will you do?
- You’ll design, build, and maintain reliable backend solutions that form the foundation of our platform, while occasionally touching the frontend layer to ensure seamless integration.
- You’ll partner closely with product, data engineering, analytics, and business teams across multiple domains to drive meaningful projects from concept to delivery.
- You’ll actively shape our software architecture, bringing your ideas and expertise into technical discussions.
- You’ll work hand-in-hand with product and quality assurance teams to ensure your code meets the highest standards of reliability and performance.
- You’ll balance maintaining existing systems with developing new features, ensuring stability while pushing innovation.
We might be a match if you…
- Have 4+ years of professional experience in software development.
- Are proficient in TypeScript and NestJS, with a strong grasp of backend development patterns.
- Are familiar with Next.js and comfortable touching the frontend layer when needed.
- Have experience working with large-scale databases and handling complex data.
- Have a track record of mentorship, guiding teammates, and sharing your experience.
- Understand and follow software development best practices, including code quality, testing, and maintainability.
- Take ownership of your work, showing accountability and a drive to deliver impactful solutions.
- Are a great partner for product, analytics, and business teams.
- Actively participate in discussions, sharing ideas and contributing to team decisions.
- Seek feedback and mentorship for continuous growth.
- Are ambitious, motivated, and eager for leadership opportunities.
- Have a great command of English (written & spoken).
- Are available to work in the afternoon hours, including occasional evening meetings due to U.S. time zone collaboration (we respect work-life balance but prioritize effective communication)
- Experience with Python or willingness to learn it.
- Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform and BigQuery.
- Familiarity with data warehouses.
