About GWEC

Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) is the industry association representing the global wind industry sector. GWEC articulates the vision for global wind energy to major world bodies, including the UNFCCC, the International Energy Agency, the International Renewable Energy Agency and other bodies, as well as governments which are responsible for strategies, targets and implementation thereof in electricity generation and supply. GWEC has a particular focus on Global South regions across the Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America. GWEC works together with the leading representative industry associations as well as the global wind energy industry to build a platform which communicates a common vision to all leading global decision-makers, policymakers and key opinion leaders.

About the Role

GWEC wishes to call upon an individual (“the Candidate” or “them”) to act as Specialist, Grids, as part of the global Policy team. The Candidate will report to the Head of Policy, and work closely with regional policy leads and the Director of Advocacy.

This is a full-time role, based in Europe or Asia; there is preference for location in London, Lisbon or Singapore, where GWEC maintains offices and the Candidate would work alongside colleagues in an exciting team setting. Relocation to Lisbon is negotiable.

Expectations

The Candidate has 3+ years of professional experience in the field of renewable energy and/or public policy, in particular on the topic of grid infrastructure and system operation, storage and flexibility technologies in the energy transition, and renewables-based energy systems. They will have a demonstrable track record of research, analysis, drafting briefs/reports and communications.

They will be responsible for writing briefings and reports on the grid and system operation issues which impact wind energy growth, including: mobilising investment and planning for future grid needs; building the infrastructure for a renewables-based power system; storage and flexibility technologies complemented by wind energy; and opportunities for international cooperation on grids. They will conduct consultation with GWEC’s members and support global advocacy activities, such as via industry taskforces, workshops with government officials, public webinars and media articles.

The Candidate should have a strong understanding of and interest in wind and renewable energy policy, as well as the wider energy transition. This role offers the opportunity to deepen policy expertise and research skills for future career growth in the policy and public affairs fields, while building a wide-ranging network in the renewables industry.

The Candidate will carry the title Specialist, Grids, a role with the following expectations:

Support the GWEC Policy practice on research and analysis of grid infrastructure for the energy transition, reflecting insights in concise, articulate briefs and reports, as well as in professional presentations in closed and public forums;
Liaise with the GWEC Advocacy and Market Intelligence leads on policy recommendations and case studies;
Consult with GWEC members on a regular basis to collect information and understand the impact of regional/global developments and technological advancements for operating wind and renewables-based systems;
Draft trade policy positions, gather inputs from GWEC’s senior leads and Executive Committee, and present positions to relevant government, industry and other stakeholders at a variety of organisational levels;
Build an understanding of the ecosystem of relevant actors in the specialist area, including relationships with potential project partners, civil society organisations, non-government organisations and other stakeholders which may be active in this area;
Coordinate with the wider GWEC team, including regional and country leads, on trade-based issues and the creation of needed insights and recommendations.

Requirements

A university degree in renewable energy, sustainability, public policy, politics, international relations, economics, journalism, communications or a related field;
Excellent spoken and written English;
Track record of editorial experience, such as writing articles, policy briefings and other non-academic materials;
Strong project management skills, and demonstrated ability to work with a team to deliver to deadlines;
Adept at using Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint, and similar office software, as well as Google counterparts such as Google Sheets;
Open to collaborative engagement with a dynamic team in a remote or office environment, depending on location;
Self-starter who can own initiatives and working independently when required; and
The Candidate must have eligibility to work in the relevant location.
