JOB DESCRIPTION – THEATRE ANAESTHETIC NURSE

POSITION SUMMARY

The Theatre Anaesthetic Nurse is responsible for preparing the operating theatre for patients, Anaesthetists, and the Surgical Team before surgical procedures. The role includes assisting during anaesthesia administration, maintaining sterile environments, supporting surgical procedures, and ensuring patient safety throughout the perioperative process.

The role also includes Recovery Room Nurse responsibilities, where the nurse monitors and cares for patients immediately following surgery until they are stable for transfer or discharge. The post holder must deliver high -quality nursing care in accordance with hospital protocols, safety standards, and consultants’ preferences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Pre -Operative & Theatre Support

• Prepare operating rooms and ensure all anaesthetic and surgical equipment is available and functioning properly prior to surgery.
  
• Assist Anaesthetists and Surgeons during procedures by connecting equipment and circulating within theatre.
  
• Maintain a sterile and safe operating environment at all times.
  
• Ensure theatre areas are maintained to required hygiene and safety standards before, during, and after procedures.
  
• Monitor stock levels and ensure adequate availability of consumables and equipment.
  
• Complete swab counts and instrument checks according to hospital policy.
  
• Enforce and comply with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Safe Surgical Checklist.
  

Recovery Room & Post -Operative Care

• Provide clear pre -operative and post -operative handovers between Ward Nurses and Recovery Nurses.
  
• Monitor patients recovering from anaesthesia and provide continuous nursing care until stabilization.
  
• Connect patients to cardiac monitoring systems, IV therapy, oxygen therapy, and pain management devices.
  
• Monitor and record vital signs including:
  • Blood Pressure
    
  • Pulse
    
  • Respiratory Rate
    
  • Temperature
    
  • Oxygen Saturation
    
• Perform suctioning and oxygen administration as required.
  
• Assess and manage patients’ pain and comfort levels.
  
• Administer medications and therapies including:
  • Intravenous (IV)
    
  • Intramuscular (IM)
    
  • Subcutaneous injections
    
  • PCA therapy
    
  • Epidural therapy
    
• Transfer accurate verbal and written patient information to ward staff.
  

Emergency & Documentation Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate nursing documentation and patient records.
  
• Respond rapidly to emergencies and changes in patient condition.
  
• Initiate CPR and emergency interventions when required.
  
• Act calmly, professionally, and efficiently during emergency situations.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

• Recognised Degree in Nursing
  
• Current Registered Nurse licensure with the Nurse and Midwifery Council of Malta
  
• Knowledge of anaesthetic and perioperative nursing procedures
  
• Strong understanding of emergency and recovery care
  
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  
• Compassionate, responsible, and patient -focused attitude
  
• Good organisational and time -management skills
  
• Professional and friendly approach
  

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Maintain up -to -date knowledge of nursing practices, anaesthetic procedures, and healthcare protocols.
  
• Adhere to all company health and safety policies.
  
• Flexibility to work across different hospital branches in Malta when required.
  
• Willingness to work shifts, weekends, nights, and public holidays.
  

• SALARY DETAILS (MALTA)
  

  Average Salary Range
  

  • €24,000 – €40,000 per year (Gross) depending on experience, qualifications, shift allowances, and overtime.
    

  Typical Monthly Salary
  

  • €2,000 – €3,300 per month including allowances and shift premiums.
