Job Description - General Operator

The General Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient monitoring of oil and gas production processes. This is an entry -to -mid -level operations role focused on "hands -on" plant work, including starting and stopping equipment, opening and closing valves, taking samples, and assisting with minor maintenance. The goal is to ensure continuous production flow while adhering to strict safety and environmental standards.

Key Responsibilities
1. Production Operations

Safely start up, operate, and shut down production equipment such as separators, compressors, pumps, and heaters.

Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels (DCS/SCADA) to ensure pressure, temperature, and flow rates are within operating limits.

Open and close manual valves to direct product flow through pipelines and processing units.

Perform routine line walks and visual inspections of the facility to detect leaks, vibrations, or abnormal conditions.

2. Sample Collection & Testing

Collect fluid samples (crude oil, condensate, produced water) at designated intervals.

Conduct basic quality control tests (e.g., BS&W – Basic Sediment & Water) to ensure product quality meets specifications.

Add chemicals (corrosion inhibitors, methanol, demulsifiers) to the process as directed.

3. Maintenance Support

Assist technicians with isolations for maintenance (fitting blinds, draining lines).

Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks such as greasing bearings, lubricating moving parts, and replacing filters.

Clean and maintain work areas, including spill cleanup and pressure washing decks.

4. Safety & Environmental Compliance

Strictly adhere to the Permit to Work (PTW) system and isolation standards (Lock -Out/Tag -Out).

Respond to emergency alarms and participate in regular safety drills (fire, H2S release, man overboard).

Report any near misses, unsafe acts, or environmental concerns immediately.

Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous and non -hazardous waste.

Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification

High School Diploma or equivalent.

H2S Alive certification is mandatory.

Standard First Aid & CPR.

WHMIS 2015 (GHS) or equivalent chemical safety training.

BOSIET / HUET / Offshore Medical required for offshore positions.

A valid Driver's License is typically required for onshore field positions.

Experience

0–3 years of experience in an industrial environment (entry -level candidates with the right safety tickets are often considered).

Previous experience in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or Water Treatment is a strong advantage.

Experience working in a control room/field operations interface is a plus.

Technical Skills

Basic understanding of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and line walks.

Mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand tools.

Basic computer literacy for data entry and logbook maintenance.

Key Competencies
Alertness: Ability to maintain focus during repetitive tasks and long shifts.

Communication: Clear and concise reporting to the Control Room Operator (CRO) and supervisors.

Team Player: Willingness to assist colleagues during heavy workloads or emergencies.

Adaptability: Ability to work 12 -hour rotating shifts (days/nights) in remote locations.
