Job Description

Atkins is one of the world's leading multi-disciplinary consultants in the ME region. We have established a high-profile presence in the Middle East for over four decades through our role as Lead Designers on a number of landmark projects including Burj Al Arab, Dubai Opera House, World Trade Centre Bahrain, Barr Al Jissa Resort in Oman, Durrat Al Bahrain, Dubai Metro project, Doha Metro project and the Rail Systems designer on the Makkah Metro in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and also Preliminary Designer for Etihad Rail in Abu Dhabi.

We are currently looking for a Project Director with a minimum of 20 years’ experience in the management of large complex rail projects.

Drawing on his/her existing major projects experience, the Project Director will be responsible for monitoring the project direction and coordinating throughout the project life-cycle to project completion.

The Project Director will be a qualified professional who has reached Senior Manager level. (it is likely that the person fulfilling this role will have had or is ready to take on the management of a major project), capable of providing planning, leadership, direction and technical expertise to manage complex tasks and multidisciplinary projects. He must have a minimum qualification BEng, BArch or equivalent, have Chartered status and more than 10 years experience with 5 being similar to this project/role.

The Project Director will also be responsible for maintaining and enhancing Atkins reputation with our Clients and developing effective long term client relationships thus identifying and developing new opportunities for the Group.

Requirements of a Project Director may include:

  • Master’s Degree in engineering or architecture from a reputed institution.

  • Proven experience in leading on large multi-disciplinary projects or running a programme of works, in design or construction environment.

  • Iconic or landmark project deliveries to be specifically highlighted in CV.

  • Experience of leading a business and having responsibility for a P&L account.

  • Proven success in the delivery of large capital projects within scope, time and budget

  • Ability to influence for results.

  • Experience in the planning, managing and successfully delivering on projects involving numerous stakeholders.

  • Strong leadership skills and proven ability to build, lead, organize, motivate and direct large multi-national organization.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact with clients, team members, and senior management.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Proficiency in project management software and tools.

  • Thorough understand of local standards, Approving Authority processes.

Relationships values to be exhibited by the Project Director:

  • Provide the principal point of contact beyond the Project Manager and Technicla Lead of the project, with the Clients’ senior representatives for the delivery of project services.

  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with the Head of Disciplines to agree execution plans for the relevant project and ensure necessary resources are in place.

  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with relevant project, technical, financial and commercial staff.

  • Develop close working relationships with other Atkins business heads, locally and internationally.

  • Advise the Project Manager at the right opportunities to mobilise and demobilize staff members to meet delivery requirements. Support, coach, develop and recruit senior managers and engineers.

  • Develop effective working relationships with colleagues within the region and internationally to maximize the cost base and technical delivery capability.

  • Support the Project Manager in the resolution of problems.

Responsibilities of the Project Director:

  • Proposals / Bid Role: Lead key bids as Bid Director, work with the Commercial / Legal teams in negotiating contract terms with Clients

  • Project Leadership Role: Accountable for delivering projects, including ownership of technical, commercial and financial aspects of the project as per the contract requirements. Leading the technical and commercial teams of the project in achieving sound delivery of projects.

  • Project Management: Establish with the Project Manager management procedures of robust management of the project, by implementing Atkins standards and best practices as per industry standards.

  • Project Planning: Developing a detailed project plan that outlines the scope, budget, timeline, and goals of the project.

  • Resource Management: Identifying (in collaboration with discipline heads) the necessary resources (staff, equipment, and materials) needed for the project and managing them efficiently.

  • Team Leadership: Building and leading a team of designers and ensuring that they have the necessary skills, resources, and support to deliver high-quality work.

  • Client Communication / Relationship: Acting as the primary point of contact for the client and maintaining regular communication to ensure that their needs and expectations are met, actively solicit feedback and channel those for internal improvements.

  • Budget Management: Ensuring that the project is delivered within the allocated budget, ensuring cost monitoring in the most effective and timely manner with the Project Manager and identifying any potential cost overruns.

  • Quality Control: Implementing quality control measures to ensure in collaboration with discipline leads that all work meets the required standards, ensure implementation and adherence to company quality procedures.

  • Risk Management: Identifying and managing any potential risks or issues that may arise during the project.

  • Reporting: Providing regular reports to senior management on the progress of the project and highlighting any issues or concerns.

  • Continuous Improvement: Identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and implementing changes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the project.

  • Change Control Management: Implement and monitor, through the Project Manager that strict change control management is implemented throughout the project duration, communicate such alerts at the appropriate moment with Client and negotiate Variation Orders to ensure financial performance of projects.
