JOB TITLE:  Medical Technologist                                                                     GRADE:  8                   

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Laboratory Section Supervisor or Technical Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTION:  To perform a variety of chemical, hematological, immunological and/or bacteriological          testing in the Clinical Laboratory to obtain accurate data for diagnosis and treatment of           disease.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Contributes to the direction and organization of the assigned section.

1. 1.     Organizes daily work congruent with schedule and work patterns of the subsection/section.


2. 2.     Assists Section Supervisor in the appropriate dissemination of information in intershift, intersectional, and departmental communication.


3. 3.     Ensures optimum level of supplies are available to provide uninterrupted services; assists in ordering supplies and maintains a supply inventory system.


4. 4.     Operates within cost effective practices of section.

Maintains state-of-art technology.

1. 1.     Assists in the evaluation of new methodologies/equipment.


2. 2.     Assists in the revision of policy and procedure manuals in accordance with specified guidelines.

Ensures the highest quality and integrity of the section’s services.

1. 1.     Obtains and processes laboratory specimens.


2. 2.     Performs analyses, tests, and procedures and maintains records as per established KFSH&RC Medical Laboratory standards.


3. 3.     Operates and maintains Laboratory equipment.


4. 4.     Maintains Quality Control Programs of the section and subsection and participates in the Quality Assurance Programs of the department.

Ensures a highly qualified, progressive technical staff.

1. 1.     Provides ongoing response/feedback to KFSH employee performance appraisal system.


2. 2.     Trains and guides students and other health care personnel, including Residents.


3. 3.     Maintains appropriate Laboratory safety procedures and practices.


4. 4.       Participates in continuing education as per policy.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor degree, with a minimum of one year of formal training in medical laboratory techniques.

EXPERIENCE & OTHER QUALIFICATION:

2 years of Clinical Laboratory experience consistent with KFSH standards as a Medical Technologist in the assigned discipline, or one year at KFSH Laboratory in appropriate technical capacity.  Registration as a Medical Technologist or Clinical Laboratory specialist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent body in country of origin is required.
