Full-time 1.0FTE Part-time 0.8FTE (0.9FTE preferred), generous salary (depending on experience), vehicle provided, salary packaging, and additional paid Christmas leave

Who are Health Consumers Council? What makes us so different?

HCC is an independent, not for profit organisation passionate about ensuring the consumer is at the heart of our state s health care system.

Through our small but passionate team we provide an Individual Advocacy Service to help people navigate our health system, while also ensuring policies and programs in health and social care systems are informed by consumer, carer, community and lived experience perspectives.

Our Engagement Program works to improve health outcomes by designing and delivering engagement activities, training sessions and workshops for consumers, community members, and those working in health services.

What THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR role looks like .


We are looking for an experienced Executive Director to join our multidisciplinary team at HCC. As Executive Director, you will provide hands-on leadership, strategic direction and management to HCC, working closely with our Management Committee, leadership team and staff to achieve our vision Equitable, person-centred, quality healthcare for all Western Australians. You will promote and consolidate HCC s reputation for representing the voice of consumers in the health sector.
No two days will look the same in this role, but a typical day might entail .

  • Influencing, communicating with and agitating health system leaders to ensure the voice of consumers is included at the table, and push for more capacity to provide HCC s services.
  • Being available to and communicating effectively with the wider team and mentoring/coaching the leadership team.
  • Engaging with consumers and community to proactively respond to emerging issues.
  • Developing tender submissions and reporting on contractual obligations.
  • Risk management reporting to the Management Committee.
  • Building alliances with other services and stakeholders to better support and empower health consumers.
  • Supporting and driving internal and external grounded change utilising positive change management principles.

We consulted our staff and Management Committee prior to recruiting for this role, and they said that the ideal person for this role will:

  • Bring key relationships (i.e., lived experience representatives in the WA health and social care system, Leaders across health and social care services, WA Department of Health and Mental Health Commission, WA community/health consumers, health consumer representatives) and be able to build and maintain relationships that can withstand agitation, as well as nurturing staffs relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Have a business mindset to secure funding and partnerships that enable longevity and growth.
  • Be a servant leader who is self aware, seeks feedback and creates safety within the team they will have a track record of building on individuals and organisations strengths.
  • Understand that HCC is a unique Advocacy peak that undertakes individual advocacy, systemic advocacy and consumer/community engagement with a variety of diverse stakeholders.
  • Communicate effectively with:

o staff to ensure clarity of goals and progress;

o clients (consumers, community, lived experience representatives, government departments) to ensure we represent the voice of consumers in the health sector; and

o stakeholders (funders, consumer health representatives) to ensure the organisations sustainability and direction.

  • Support considered and grounded internal and external change (i.e. technology and models of engagement/service delivery) whilst valuing the current value and impact of HCC.
  • Support the link between staff and the Management Committee and leverage the strengths and contributions of the members of the Management Committee.

Requirements

  1. Demonstrated commitment to the vision, values, purpose and objectives of the Health Consumers Council, with an understanding and empathy for the need for active promotion of consumer rights and involvement of consumers and community to influence positive change.
  2. Experience in executive management positions with a health or human service background, able to inspire strategic direction and planning, confident in overseeing multiple programs, committed to continuous improvement and values-based leadership.
  3. Demonstrated entrepreneurial approach to non-profit management, able to understand financial reports, as well as having a capacity to grow the organisation to meet emerging trends and needs.
  4. Outstanding interpersonal skills, including a proven record in networking, partnering, influencing and negotiating with a wide range of people and entities.
  5. Highly developed critical thinking, conceptual analysis, evaluation and communication skills for a range of audiences, confident in advocating, public speaking, and responding to the media.
  6. Capacity to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  7. Self-aware and resilient with a commitment to personal development.
  8. Tertiary qualification in a Health, Community Services or Business discipline.

Further desirable criteria

  • Demonstrated ability of being guided by cultural advice from Aboriginal staff and Aboriginal community members , and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse staff and community members.
  • Demonstrated awareness of the social determinants of health and the potential barriers to inclusion in employment and services experienced by people who are marginalised.
