Data & Systems Officer, Spekboom Restoration Project

Reports to: Nursery Operations Manager

NatCarbon Africa seeks a Data & Systems Officer in the Nursery Operations team for the large-scale Spekboom Restoration Project in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.


 


With our partner, Imperative Global, our aim is to restore up to 100,000 hectares of degraded subtropical thicket biome. The Project entails planting Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) on privately owned land to improve ecosystem functioning and agricultural productivity over time, promote biodiversity, improve soil filtration, enhance water storage capabilities, and to reduce soil erosion. The Project is estimated to permanently store large quantities of Carbon Dioxide over the Project life, thus positively contributing towards climate change mitigation.


 


Position Summary: 


The Data & Systems Officer is required to oversee, manage, and report on various systems and processes, including MyCrops as a traceability system, Agrigistics (AllWage), and stock control systems. The Data & Systems Officer will also assist with the dispatch of plants and associated administration, ensuring seamless operations and optimal performance of our agricultural technology infrastructure. 


 


Roles and Responsibilities: 



    System Management:


     


    Oversee and maintain various systems and processes, including MyCrops as a traceability system, Agrigistics (AllWage), and stock control systems, ensuring they are running efficiently and effectively. 


     


    Monitoring and Reporting


     


    Regularly monitor system performance and generate reports on system health, usage, and any issues that arise. 


     


    Troubleshooting


     


    Identify, diagnose, and resolve technical issues related to different systems and processes. 


     


    User Support:


     


    Provide technical support and training to users of various systems. 


     


    Dispatch Assistance:



    Collaborate with the dispatch team to ensure timely and accurate dispatch of plants. 


     


    Data Management:


     


    Ensure data integrity and security within the systems, including regular backups and updates. Capture and verify data submitted daily. 


     


    System Upgrades:


     


    Plan and implement system upgrades and improvements as needed. 


     


    Stock Control:


     


    Assist with stock control processes to ensure accurate inventory management and timeous order of goods required. 


     


    Efficiency Improvements:



    Develop and implement systems to improve operational efficiencies. 


     


    Documentation and Reports:


     


    Maintain comprehensive documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps. Compile and submit system report on regular intervals as required.


     


    Accreditation Support:


     


    Assist with the SGASA accreditation process and implementation to ensure compliance with standards. 


     


    General:

    • Some travel within the Eastern and Western Cape may be required, including to remote locations, with occasional weekend or holiday work to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular

    Skills: 



    • Proficiency in managing various technology and systems, including traceability, stock control, production and attendance systems.

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. 


     


    Qualifications: 



    • Degree in Project Management, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology or similar.


     


    Knowledge and Experience: 



    • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience.

    • Proficient in MS Office package.

    • Knowledge of agricultural processes and technology. 

    • Experience with plant dispatch and nursery operations. 

    • Proven experience as a Systems Manager or similar role, preferably in an agricultural or logistics environment. 


     


    Working Conditions



    • Frequent travel within the Eastern and Western Cape anticipated, including to remote locations. Travel may on occasion cross weekends and holidays to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular
