NatCarbon Africa seeks a Nursery General Supervisor And Data Capturer, in the Nursery Department for the large-scale Spekboom Restoration Project in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.


 


With our partner, Imperative Global, our aim is to restore up to 100,000 hectares of degraded subtropical thicket biome. The Project entails planting Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) on privately owned land to improve ecosystem functioning and agricultural productivity over time, promote biodiversity, improve soil filtration, enhance water storage capabilities, and to reduce soil erosion. The Project is estimated to permanently store large quantities of Carbon Dioxide over the Project life, thus positively contributing towards climate change mitigation.


 


Position Summary: 


Under the guidance of the Propagation Supervisor, the General Supervisor and Data Capturer is responsible for overseeing the contractor teams, doing quality assurance and accurate data capture of the number of cuttings placed and plants in the nursery. This role involves ensuring SMME teams follows work procedures, monitoring daily activities, ensuring compliance to relevant protocols, working together in a team and accurate data recording on relevant systems on a daily basis.


 


Roles and Responsibilities: 



  • Assist to set out the tasks for contractors with clear targets.

  • Assist with quality control on work done, as per task requirements.

  • Accurate and timeous completion of all relevant documents and reports, including production reports, and quality control forms, accurately and timeously. 

  • Ensure all health, safety and environmental requirements are adhered to by contractors and conduct daily checks on teams (vehicle safety, PPE).

  • Perform daily checks on equipment, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) used in the nursery. 

  • Ensure that all sanitization protocols are applied by contractors and other health and safety policies or protocols.

  • Undertake meticulous data capture for production and quality metrics. 

  • Attend meetings and training as needed.

  • Perform administrative duties as needed.

  • Ensure all NatCarbon Africa policies and procedures are implemented.

  • Make recommendations to supervisor based on observations in the field to constantly ensure improvement and efficiencies.

  • Some travel within the Eastern and Western Cape may be required, including to remote locations, with occasional weekend or holiday work to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular.

Skills: 



  • Excellent people skills and ability to communicate in at least 2 of the languages used in the area (English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa.

  • Computer literate using MS Office package.

  • Ability to quickly get familiar with technology and use technology like cell phone applications to capture data.

  • Ability to work with contractor teams.

  • Ability to function independently and within a team.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in data recording.

  • Problem-solving skills and quick decision-making abilities.

  • Ability to schedule work and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors.


 


Qualifications: 



  • Valid Senior Certificate

  • Valid driver’s license (advantageous).


 


Knowledge and Experience: 



  • Experience supervising SMME teams.

  • Computer proficiency (MS Word, Excel).




  • POSITION LOCATION

  • The position is at the Field restoration nursery on Botterblom farm outside of Jansenville (Eastern Cape). Transport will be provided between Jansenville and the work site.



Working Conditions


 



  • Frequent travel within the Eastern and Western Cape anticipated, including to remote locations. Travel may on occasion cross weekends and holidays to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular
