POSITION INFO:
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Manager to oversee and manage construction projects in compliance with the Project and Construction Management Professions Act, 2000 (Act No. 48 of 2000) and the regulations set forth by the South African Council for Construction Management Professionals. The Construction Manager will be responsible for leading project teams, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budgets, quality standards, and safety regulations. Experience with large, buried pipelines is a must. Experience with Rand Water, Umgeni Water, Department of Water Affairs and Johannesburg Water will be advantageous.

Responsibilities:

  1. Project Planning and Coordination:
    • Develop project plans, schedules, and budgets in accordance with client requirements and regulatory standards.
    • Coordinate with architects, engineers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met.
    • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks and issues, and implement corrective actions as necessary to keep projects on track.
  1. Construction Management:
    • Supervise construction activities, including site preparation, excavation, piping work, structural erection, finishing, and environmental reinstatement.
    • Ensure compliance with client requirements, health and safety standards, and environmental requirements.
    • Conduct regular site inspections to assess work quality, safety practices, and adherence to project specifications.
    • Address construction-related issues, conflicts, and disputes in a timely and effective manner.
  1. Budget and Cost Management:
    • Experience in pricing of projects. Many projects will be the responsibility of the Project Manager from Tender to Completion.
    • Manage project budgets, expenditures, and cash flow to ensure cost-effective project delivery.
    • Review and approve contractor invoices, change orders, and payment applications in accordance with contractual agreements.
    • Identify opportunities for cost savings, value engineering , and optimization of resources.
  1. Quality Assurance/Control:
    • Implement quality assurance and quality control measures to ensure workmanship, materials, and installations meet project specifications and industry standards.
    • Conduct inspections, tests, and audits to verify compliance with quality requirements and address non-conformities.
  1. Stakeholder Management:
    • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, regulatory authorities, and other project stakeholders.
    • Communicate project progress, milestones, and issues effectively to stakeholders through regular meetings, reports, and presentations.
    • Address stakeholder concerns and ensure timely resolution of issues to maintain project momentum and client satisfaction.
  1. Health and Safety Compliance:
    • Enforce health and safety policies, procedures, and regulations to promote a safe work environment.
    • Conduct safety audits, hazard assessments, and job site inspections to identify and mitigate safety risks.
    • Provide safety training, instruction, and supervision to project personnel to promote awareness and compliance with safety protocols.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project documentation, including contracts, permits, drawings, specifications, and correspondence.
    • Prepare progress reports, construction schedules, cost estimates, and other project-related documents as required.
    • Ensure all project documentation is organized, accessible, and compliant with legal and regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering , or a related field.
  2. Registration as a Professional Construction Manager with the South African Council for Construction Management Professionals.
  3. Minimum of 10 years of experience in construction management, with a proven track record of successfully delivering projects on time and within budget. Contactable References.
  4. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and interact effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  5. Proficiency in project management software, construction scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  6. Knowledge of health and safety regulations, quality management systems, and environmental best practices applicable to construction projects.
  7. Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution abilities. Understanding of Socio-Economic Challenges.
  8. Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  9. Must be in good health. Work will require walking the pipeline, some times 2 to 3 kilometres a day.
