Job Description - Project Site Lead (Site Supervisor)

1. Job Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced and results-driven Site Supervisor / Site Manager to lead and oversee our Backfill Project within an open cast coal mining environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing daily site operations, coordinating personnel and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements, and delivering project objectives efficiently and effectively.

The position requires a strong leader with proven mining and earthworks experience, excellent planning and organisational skills, and the ability to manage multiple operational activities while maintaining the highest standards of safety, productivity, and quality.


2. Key Responsibilities

  1. Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily site operations to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  2. Manage operators, general workers, subcontractors, and support personnel on site.
  3. Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), client requirements, site procedures, and company policies.
  4. Monitor production activities, rehabilitation works, and backfilling operations to ensure targets are met.
  5. Coordinate equipment allocation and utilisation to maximise operational efficiency.
  6. Conduct daily site inspections and ensure safe working practices are maintained.
  7. Identify operational risks and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  8. Monitor project progress and provide regular reports to management and clients.
  9. Ensure quality standards are maintained throughout all project activities.
  10. Manage site resources, materials, and equipment effectively.
  11. Facilitate toolbox talks, site meetings, and workforce communication.
  12. Liaise with client representatives, safety personnel, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  13. Investigate incidents, operational challenges, and performance issues and implement corrective measures.
  14. Promote a positive safety culture and support Zero Harm objectives.


3. Minimum Requirements

  1. Grade 12 / Matric certificate.
  2. National Diploma or Degree in Mining, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or related field.
  3. Minimum 5 years' supervisory or management experience within mining, earthworks, rehabilitation, or bulk material handling operations.
  4. Proven experience in open cast coal mining environments.
  5. Strong understanding of mining operations, rehabilitation activities, and backfilling processes.
  6. Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and applicable mining regulations.
  7. Valid driver's licence.
  8. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications.
  9. Strong reporting, planning, and administrative skills.
  10. Medically fit to work on a mining site.


4. Advantageous

  1. Mine Overseer Certificate or relevant mining supervisory qualification.
  2. Project Management certification.
  3. Experience managing large-scale rehabilitation or backfill projects.
  4. Knowledge of production planning and fleet management.
  5. Experience working with major mining houses and principal contractors.
  6. First Aid, Incident Investigation, or Safety Management certifications.
  7. Exposure to contract management and client liaison functions.
