Job Description - Resident Geologist

Summary

PURPOSE:

• To lead and integrate an effective team to ensure Geoscientific integrity and optimal resource utilization.

Minimum Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
•    BSc (Hons) Geology (Essential/Minimum)
•    Management Development Programme (Essential/Minimum)

EXPERIENCE: 8 years Relevant Commodity Geology; Mining and Metallurgical processes experience. Geographic Information Systems, Geological modelling and Geological data-base management experience With Project management and people management experience  (Essential/Minimum) Operational

Duties & Responsibilities

Best Practice and Knowledge Management

• Facilitate and implement an integrated functional process to ensure timely and accurate geoscientific information for the operation
• Manage and ensure compliance for the resource value chain (production, grade control, reconciliation, geotechnical, Geohydrology, geophysical and structural geology programs)
• Align and ensure integration from the first geological principles to estimation, resource classification and reconciliation as to create optimal resource integrity and resource utilization
• Develop, implement and manage systems to ensure updated and timely geological data
• Ensure effective geoscientific data capture-and-management with sound geological interpretations to create long- and short-term geoscientific models and estimation with integrity
• Verify compilation of geological reports
• Support/Conduct Hydro-geological monitoring
• Conduct evaluations and implement solutions/scenarios to ensure optimal resource utilization
• Facilitate and support the implementation of multi-disciplinary technologies
• Create a compliant and accurate resource statement and act as resource competent person
• Manage internal and external relations, including the interface with external providers or other functions responsible to ensure that the business needs are met, and employees are satisfied
• Provide relevant support and legislative service to applicable stakeholders
• Support the operation management team in executing the business plan and strategy
• Develop (in alignment with Group Manager) and implement a functional strategy to integrate the geology section outputs
• Develop and implement the on-mine in-fill drilling strategy
• Compile and implement a resource estimation strategy and schedule
• Develop a strategy to integrate the geology outputs with that of the mining, planning and metallurgical disciplines
• Create a technology review and implementation plan in alignment with Group Manager


Business Performance and Operations  

• Manage and ensure compliance for the resource value chain (production, grade control, reconciliation, geotechnical, Geohydrology, geophysical and structural geology programs)
• Align and ensure integration from the first geological principles to estimation, resource classification and reconciliation as to create optimal resource integrity and resource utilization
• Develop, implement and manage systems to ensure updated and timely geological data
• Verify compilation of geological reports
• Support/Conduct Hydro-geological monitoring


Compliance, Governance and Assurance    

• Act as functional extension of the Group Manager and Resource Competent person of the operation
• Assist in the implementation and assurance in regard to applicable Group mineral policies/procedures/standards and report non-compliance to relevant Stakeholders
• Adhere to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and comply with company specific Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) policies and procedures in area of responsibility
• Ensure business operations adhere to corporate governance, statutory, legal and other requirements
• Identify and manage risks by assessing liabilities, reporting and monitoring standards
• Implement and maintain audit structure
• Compile mineral resource statements and report aligned with guidelines from Lead Competent Person and applicable Reporting Codes
• Ensure compliance with Geosciences policies, procedures and standards
• Identify, track and resolve geoscientific challenges/risk and unlock geological potential


Consulting and Project Services    

• Conduct technical evaluations/assessments of the resource
• Participate in multi-disciplinary project teams as part of optimization of the resource and reserve of the operation
• Provide accurate and timely information for the mining, metallurgical and planning disciplines


Financial Management    

• Review, compile, obtain sign-off and implement budget for the geology section as a whole
• Manage the budget in regard to expenditure over time and within the Group policies
• Report accurately and timely
• Conduct effective contract management with monthly or milestone reconciliation and reporting


Functional Excellence    

• Personnel: Ensure the applicable competencies are in place/provided to ensure effective execution of all mining geology activities. Consult with Group Manager to address any risks
• Performance management: Advise in the clarification of mining geology deliverables as well as roles/responsibilities and expectations within underground and open pit mining operations. Define operational and individual performance standards; monitor and measure performance, reward and recognise high performance. Apply consistent performance and consequence management; take prompt action, report non-performance and contribute to corrective measures
• Culture/functional climate: Embody, translate and entrench the Company’s culture and values in function, address behaviours that undermine values. Foster effective teamwork and unity. Demonstrate and encourage collaboration including cross-functionally and create culture of collaboration. Create an environment in which people are inspired to perform and a high-performance culture
• Communication/engagement: Encourage open expression of ideas/opinions and foster dialogue. Seek out different opinions. Inform people of decisions, changes and other relevant information. Proactively address conflicts and initiate difficult conversations
• Team development: Develop effective and high performing production geology fraternity including shared team purpose, principles, goals, accountability and effective team player capabilities. Create an environment of accountability and trust


People Management    

• Support development and implement systems/initiatives to drive performance excellence
• Create, inspire/lead high-performance teams
• Implement successful change initiatives
• Coordinate optimal utilization and sourcing of appropriate resources
• Formal/informal mentoring of Professionals-in-Training (PIT's) and Bursars


Safe and Healthy Work Environment    

• Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable SHE policies and procedures in line with set standards (22 and 23 of the Mine, Health and Safety Act, Mine, Health and Safety Act, Act 29 of 1996, Rock fall Codes of Practice (COP's), Environmental Management Plan (EMP), Integrated Water Use Licence Application (IWULA), National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), Group policies, International Organisation of standard (ISO) 14001)
• Encourage a culture that focuses on safety in all operations
• Conduct gap analysis Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) and implement control measures on a continuous basis
