Production Manager

This position is based at a Sugar Mill and reports to the General Manager  and is expected to take responsibility in ensuring the optimization of sugar manufacturing  in line with set targets through responsible management and optimization of resources, technologies and capital.

Top Accountabilities

 1.      Operations Management:

• Analyze the operational strategy identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
• Manage the day to day running of the Mill ensuring that production targets are met.
• Conduct business risk assessments related to all aspects of the operations people, processes and equipment
• Consult and gain input, agreement and buy in to objectives and priorities for the year – conduct change management where required
• Prepare and present performance to senior management by investigating issues and share recommendations / actions

2.   Planning and Scheduling

• Plan and implement factory crush plans to set factory targets.
• Track performance on crush plan on a weekly basis.
• Provide feedback in the form of production reports to various stake holders.
• Interact with marketing department with regards to requirements from production.

3.      Continuous Improvement Projects

• Identify and initiate projects
• Champion, drive and/or manage projects
• Monitor project progress, milestones and impact
• Manage the change process as a result of the project

4.      Safety, health and environment

• Chair safety meetings and provide feedback on area results and progress
• Demonstrate compliance to all requirements
• Conduct and execute necessary requirements for leading score indicators
• Executing specific actions to address legal compliance requirements, e.g. audit findings to non- conformances, maintenance of training records and skills matrix, checking and verifying training materials is up to date and relevant. etc.

5.      People engagement, management and development

• Interact, provide and/ or clarifying instructions and work procedures in relation to the Operations and, checks the implementation and/ or execution of responsibilities
• Monitors conduct, performance and implements corrective measures to align behaviors and activities
• Participate in the recruitment process to enable proper identification and appointment of key skills to specific roles within the Department
• Identifying training needs and proposing specific training interventions to improve skills and capabilities; Performance Management System applications, conducting performance review sessions with the supervisory team
• Take action to improve engagement and employee relations
• Apply the disciplinary process through to initiating and chairing enquiries
• Comply with THS policies and procedures and legislative requirements
• Interact positively with employees in the workplace and build a positive culture with open and constructive communication and teamwork

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Technology degree in Chemical Engineering
• 5-7 years’ experience in a sugar manufacturing environment
• Computer skills/literacy.
• A valid driver’s license.
