A family -run wholesale and distribution business, operating for over 20 years, is looking for an Assistant Accountant to join their finance team. This is a permanent, full -time role based in office with some flexibility around lunch -time. Working hours are Monday to Thursday, 08:30 – 16:00 and Friday's 08h00 to 15h00.
This is a hands -on, operational role, ideal for a finance professional who enjoys taking ownership of the full bookkeeping function and is genuinely looking for a long -term opportunity within a stable, fast -paced, and well -run business.
You will work closely with senior management, supporting day -to -day financial operations, compliance, and reporting, while contributing meaningfully to the ongoing efficiency and growth of the business.
Responsibilities:
Bookkeeping & Financial Reporting
Manage weekly and monthly bookkeeping across multiple company entities.
Perform bank reconciliations, cashbook processing, and general ledger management.
Prepare monthly management reports, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, debtors, creditors, and VAT reports.
Process accounting journals accurately and within deadlines.
Maintain meticulous financial records and support internal and external audits.
Preparation of necessary documentation for annual audit by external auditors.
Payroll & HR Compliance
Process monthly payroll, including payslips, payroll reconciliations, leave reports, EMP201s, and payroll analyses.
Ensure statutory compliance with PAYE, UIF, and other labour -related requirements.
Liaise with employees and management to resolve payroll -related queries.
Tax & Regulatory Compliance
Prepare and submit VAT201, EMP201, EMP501 returns, and IRP5s.
Manage UIF submissions and uFiling registrations.
Assist with SARS reviews and audits, ensuring compliance with South African tax legislation.
Ad -hoc & Operational Support
Support senior management with financial reporting, analysis, and ad -hoc projects.
Maintain well -structured, accurate, and up -to -date digital financial records.
Identify and contribute to improvements in financial processes and operational efficiency.
Requirements
Diploma, Degree, or professional certification in Bookkeeping, Accounting, or related field.
5–10+ years’ experience in a senior bookkeeping or accounting role, ideally within a manufacturing, distribution, or multi -entity environment.
Demonstrated stability in previous roles and a clear interest in long -term employment.
Proven ability to manage the full bookkeeping function independently.
High proficiency in Xero, QuickBooks, Sage, SimplePay, SARS eFiling, uFiling, and EasyFile (Pastel Accounting/Payroll advantageous).
Strong understanding of accounting principles and South African tax legislation.
Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and time management.
