Job Description - Checkout Assistant (H14/TP/11)

Job Purpose

To provide friendly, efficient, and accurate service at the checkout area by assisting customers with packing and handling their purchases in a professional and courteous manner. The Checkout Assistant ensures speed, accuracy, and customer satisfaction at the point of sale while maintaining the highest standards of hygiene, presentation, and safety in the checkout zone.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service and Support

  • Greet customers politely and offer assistance with packing and carrying goods.
  • Provide professional, friendly service that enhances the customer’s shopping experience.
  • Handle customer queries courteously and direct them to the appropriate staff member when necessary.
  • Display Pick n Pay’s values of care, integrity, and helpfulness at all times.

Packing and Checkout Assistance

  • Pack groceries efficiently and securely, separating fragile, cold, and cleaning products appropriately.
  • Ensure quick, organized packing to maintain checkout flow and reduce waiting times.
  • Assist with bagging products while minimizing wastage of plastic bags.
  • Support cashiers with packing during peak trading hours.

Cash Handling Support

  • Remain alert during all transactions to prevent loss or incorrect change.
  • Follow all cash handling and transaction procedures when assisting the cashier.
  • Report any suspicious activity or errors immediately to the Frontline Supervisor.

Queue Management and Speed of Service

  • Maintain smooth customer flow in the checkout area.
  • Direct customers to open tills when queues are long.
  • Assist with trolley management and ensure customers are served promptly.
  • Support the supervisor in managing bag and till point stock (bags, slip rolls, pens, etc.).

Hygiene and Safety in Frontline Area

  • Keep checkout counters, trolleys, baskets, and floor areas clean and hazard-free.
  • Follow hygiene and sanitation protocols, especially around food and packaging.
  • Ensure “Wet Floor” signage is used when required to prevent accidents.
  • Maintain neat personal appearance and adhere to the Pick n Pay uniform policy.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Work cooperatively with cashiers, supervisors, and other frontline team members.
  • Communicate politely and clearly with customers and colleagues.
  • Participate in shift briefings and comply with work allocation instructions.
  • Support training of new packers or casuals as needed.

Compliance with Store Procedures

  • Adhere to Pick n Pay operating procedures, including cash handling, security, and safety rules.
  • Report all discrepancies, losses, or breakages immediately to the Supervisor or Service Manager.
  • Follow PPE requirements and comply with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Support management during stock counts or promotional changes near checkout zones.

13. Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993
  • Follow all Pick n Pay hygiene, sanitation, and PPE standards
  • Report hazards, spills, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Maintain clear walkways and checkout areas
  • Participate in health, safety, and customer service training sessions

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification or equivalent level of literacy and numeracy required to perform the role
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and perform packing and customer service duties
  • Work Conditions: Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment and handle operational demands during peak trading periods
  • Availability: Willingness and availability to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, in line with retail trading requirements
  • Process Adherence: Ability to follow operational procedures, including customer service and product handling standards
  • Previous retail or service industry experience
  • Basic understanding of cash handling procedures (advantageous)
  • Basic understanding of product handling and food safety practices (training will be provided where required)
