Job Summary:

The Clinical Perfusionist II is a mid-level professional responsible for independently operating cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machines and other extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac surgeries and related procedures. This role involves managing the patient’s physiological status, ensuring safe and effective perfusion support, and collaborating closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff.

The Perfusionist II also participates in training, quality improvement, and may serve as a resource or mentor to junior perfusionists and students.

Key Responsibilities:

• Set up, operate, and monitor heart-lung machines and extracorporeal circulation devices during open-heart surgery and related procedures.
  


• Administer blood products, medications, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit as directed.
  


• Monitor and interpret patient hemodynamics, blood gases, and metabolic parameters to ensure optimal perfusion and oxygenation.
  


• Operate ancillary devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), ventricular assist devices (VADs), and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), as needed.
  


• Maintain and calibrate perfusion equipment in compliance with safety and infection control standards.
  


• Document perfusion procedures, patient parameters, and interventions accurately and thoroughly.
  


• Participate in emergency response codes and rewarming protocols.
  


• Train and mentor Perfusionist I staff and clinical perfusion students.
  


• Assist in departmental quality assurance and improvement activities.
  


• Stay current with advances in perfusion science, techniques, and regulatory standards.
  

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Cardiovascular Perfusion or related field.
  


• Graduation from an accredited Perfusion Technology program.
  


• Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or equivalent (depending on country/region).
  


• State licensure/registration where applicable.
  


• Minimum of 2–5 years of experience in clinical perfusion.
  


• Current BLS and ACLS certification.
