Our client, an established engineering manufacturer supplying specialised transformer solutions to the industrial and mining sectors, is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the electrical design and development of oil-immersed and dry-type transformers. The role covers the full design process, from engineering calculations and technical documentation through to manufacturing support, testing, failure investigation and continuous design improvement.

Responsibilities:

Complete electrical designs for new, repeat, modified and specialised oil-immersed and dry-type transformers.

Perform transformer design calculations covering core sizes, winding dimensions, conductor lengths, electrical clearances, insulation, impedance, losses, temperature rise, cooling and short-circuit withstand requirements.

Prepare bills of material, technical schedules, drawings and supporting engineering documentation.

Support manufacturing by resolving transformer production problems and reviewing design changes or deviation.

Develop manufacturing procedures and quality-control checklists for oil-immersed transformers.

Provide technical guidance during testing and investigate flashover, insulation, winding and other transformer performance problems.

Conduct root-cause and failure investigations, prepare technical reports and presentations, and recommend corrective and preventative actions.

Participate in tender clarifications, customer technical meetings and site visits where measurements or additional technical information are required.

Improve transformer designs, engineering calculations, design tools, templates, procedures and technical standards.

Provide technical input on components, materials and alternative suppliers, and assist with supplier and procurement queries.

Participate in engineering audits and quality checks when required.

Requirements

A minimum of 5 years’ experience designing and testing transformers is essential.

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar relevant qualification is essential.

Postgraduate studies in Electrical Engineering or a similar field are advantageous.

ECSA Professional Engineer or Candidate Engineer registration is advantageous.

Experience designing oil-immersed transformers.

Experience preparing bills of material, technical schedules, drawings and supporting design documentation.

Knowledge of transformer manufacturing, testing and failure-investigation processes.

Knowledge of AutoCAD and technical drawing review processes.

Knowledge of local and international design and manufacturing standards.
