About the Opportunity

Our client, a small and established precision engineering company based in the Strand / Helderberg area, is looking for a practical and hands-on Engineering Fitting & Assembly Assistant to join their workshop team.

This position does not require a highly qualified or trade-tested Fitter. It would suit someone with previous experience in an engineering, machining, fitting or mechanical workshop who is comfortable working with their hands and using basic engineering tools.

The successful candidate will mainly assist with the fitting, assembly and finishing of precision-machined aluminium components. Attention to detail and careful handling are extremely important, as completed components must not be damaged during the assembly process.

Minimum Requirements

• Previous experience in an engineering, machining, fitting, mechanical or manufacturing workshop preferred.


• Basic hands-on fitting and assembly experience.


• Comfortable using hand and engineering tools.


• Basic understanding of threads, tapping, bolts and fasteners.


• Experience installing Helicoils would be highly advantageous.


• Experience working with aluminium components would be advantageous.


• Good practical and mechanical ability.


• Strong attention to detail.


• Able to follow instructions accurately.


• Quality-conscious and careful when handling precision-machined components.


• Reliable, hardworking and willing to learn.


• Able to work effectively as part of a workshop team.

 Key Responsibilities

• Install Helicoils into aluminium components.


• Correctly tap holes before Helicoil installation.


• Check that Helicoils and threads are installed correctly.


• Fit bolts and ensure threads engage and function properly.


• Carry out basic fitting and assembly of aluminium components.


• Use basic hand and engineering tools correctly and safely.


• Deburr and finish components where required.


• Clean components before and after assembly.


• Ensure finished parts are neat, clean and presentable.


• Handle precision-machined components carefully to prevent scratches, damaged threads or other damage.


• Identify and report damaged or incorrectly fitted components.


• Assist with general fitting and finishing duties within the workshop.


• Maintain a clean and organised workstation.


• Follow workshop quality and health & safety procedures.

Ideal Candidate

We are not looking for a senior or highly qualified Fitter for this position.

The ideal candidate may currently be working as a Fitting Assistant, Junior Fitter, Engineering Assistant, Workshop Assistant or Assembly Assistant, or have similar hands-on workshop experience.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is practical, careful and takes pride in the quality of their work.

This is a great opportunity for someone with a basic engineering foundation who would like to gain further hands-on experience within a precision engineering environment.
