Job Description - Floor Merchandiser (H14/FM/9)

Job Purpose

To ensure that all store shelves, displays, and promotional areas are fully stocked, neatly arranged, and visually appealing in accordance with Pick n Pay’s merchandising and hygiene standards. The Floor Merchandiser contributes to increased sales and customer satisfaction by maintaining accurate pricing, product availability, and a clean, well-organized store floor.

Key Responsibilities

Merchandising and Display Management

  • Merchandise products according to store planograms and promotional layouts.
  • Ensure shelves, bins, and displays are neatly arranged and fully stocked at all times.
  • Maintain high standards of visual presentation across all departments.
  • Assist in setting up promotional and seasonal displays in coordination with management.
  • Ensure correct facings and uniform alignment of products on shelves.
  • Follow Pick n Pay’s merchandising standards for height, spacing, and signage.

Stock Rotation and Replenishment

  • Monitor product expiry dates and apply the FIFO (First-In-First-Out) principle.
  • Remove expired, damaged, or unsellable products immediately.
  • Refill shelves and promotional bins throughout the day to maintain availability.
  • Report low stock levels or shortages to the Supervisor or Receiving team.
  • Assist in unpacking and transferring stock from storerooms to the sales floor.
  • Support accurate stock counts and participate in departmental stock-takes.

Pricing and Promotional Accuracy

  • Ensure all products are correctly priced and shelf labels are up to date.
  • Replace outdated or missing price tickets promptly.
  • Verify promotional prices and signage before trading begins.
  • Assist with implementing markdowns, clearance items, and new pricing updates.
  • Report pricing or barcode discrepancies to the Floor Supervisor.

Customer Service and Assistance

  • Provide friendly, professional assistance to customers on the sales floor.
  • Guide customers to locate products or suggest alternatives when items are out of stock.
  • Maintain a helpful and approachable attitude at all times.
  • Escalate unresolved customer queries to the relevant Supervisor or Manager.
  • Promote new or seasonal products when interacting with customers.

Store Appearance, Cleanliness, and Safety

  • Maintain cleanliness in aisles, shelves, and promotional areas.
  • Remove empty cartons, pallets, or waste immediately after restocking.
  • Ensure trolleys, ladders, and equipment are used safely and stored correctly.
  • Report spillages, hazards, or maintenance issues to the Supervisor.
  • Follow all housekeeping, hygiene, and store presentation guidelines.
  • Ensure aisles remain clear and accessible to customers and staff.

Teamwork, Communication, and Compliance

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, supervisors, and other departments.
  • Attend daily team briefings and follow instructions from the Floor Manager.
  • Report stock issues, customer complaints, or operational challenges promptly.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Support training and cross-departmental tasks when required.
  • Uphold Pick n Pay’s values and brand image at all times.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993
  • Follow all health, safety, and hygiene protocols on the store floor
  • Report hazards, injuries, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Use equipment and ladders safely and responsibly
  • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions
  • Ensure compliance with PPE requirements when necessary
  • Promote a safe, clean, and hazard-free work environment

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: General education (approximately Grade 10–12 / NQF Level 2–4) or equivalent level of literacy and numeracy required to perform the role
  • Experience: Previous experience in a retail or merchandising environment required to perform the core functions of the role
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely lift, move, and handle stock in line with operational requirements
  • Work Conditions: Ability to perform physical tasks, including prolonged standing and manual handling of stock
  • Availability: Willingness and availability to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, in line with retail trading requirements
  • Basic understanding of stock control, product rotation, and merchandising practices
  • Understanding of Pick n Pay merchandising standards

  • Ability to communicate effectively in a work environment
  • Attention to detail in maintaining visual merchandising and presentation standards
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced retail environment
  • Basic numeracy skills relevant to stock handling and product identification

  • Basic understanding of merchandising principles (training provided where required)
