Job Description - Frontline Cashier (F9CASHIER7)

Job Purpose

To provide efficient, friendly, and accurate checkout service to customers, ensuring all transactions are processed correctly while delivering exceptional service. The Frontline Cashier is responsible for handling cash, maintaining register accuracy, promoting customer satisfaction, and upholding Pick n Pay’s professional image at the point of sale.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service and Checkout Operations

  • Greet every customer politely and process purchases efficiently.
  • Scan items accurately, confirm prices, and ensure correct totals.
  • Handle all payment methods including cash, cards, vouchers, and loyalty points.
  • Pack customer purchases neatly and assist with bagging when required.
  • Maintain a friendly, professional attitude at all times.
  • Inform customers about promotions, loyalty programmes, and special offers.
  • Handle customer queries or complaints with patience and refer unresolved issues to the Supervisor.

Cash Handling and Transaction Accuracy

  • Balance cash float and till at the beginning and end of every shift.
  • Process refunds, exchanges, and voids according to company procedures.
  • Ensure accurate cashing-up, with no discrepancies.
  • Safeguard cash, vouchers, and coupons in accordance with store policy.
  • Immediately report any errors, shortfalls, or suspicious activity.
  • Adhere strictly to Pick n Pay’s cash control and security procedures.

Product Scanning and Pricing Control

  • Scan all products efficiently and verify prices match displayed shelf labels.
  • Identify and report pricing errors or barcode issues to management.
  • Apply discounts, promotions, or loyalty rewards correctly.
  • Verify identification for age-restricted products (e.g. liquor, tobacco) per company policy.
  • Ensure accurate weighing and pricing of fresh produce and bulk items.

Till Point Housekeeping and Presentation

  • Keep checkout counters neat, clean, and organized.
  • Maintain sufficient supplies of bags, till rolls, pens, and cleaning materials.
  • Ensure that till counters are clear of unnecessary items.
  • Follow store standards for hygiene and presentation.
  • Sanitize work area regularly and maintain cleanliness throughout the shift.

Compliance with Policies and Security Standards

  • Comply with Pick n Pay’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), BCEA, and OHSA.
  • Adhere to the store’s uniform, grooming, and PPE requirements.
  • Report any suspicious transactions, counterfeit notes, or theft immediately.
  • Follow procedures for cash drops, safe deposits, and void transactions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and customer privacy at all times.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Cooperate with colleagues and support the checkout team during busy trading hours.
  • Communicate effectively with Supervisors, Cash Office, and Managers.
  • Assist with opening or closing tills and float allocation as required.
  • Attend daily briefings and comply with shift schedules.
  • Provide support to other departments when required by management.

  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Ensure cables, boxes, and equipment are stored safely around checkout areas.
  • Report any hazards, injuries, or safety incidents immediately.
  • Participate in safety and hygiene awareness training.
  • Uphold all Pick n Pay customer and employee safety regulations.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification or equivalent
  • Experience - Previous retail or cashier experience will be advantageous but is not essential. Training will be provided where required.
  • Cash Handling Knowledge - Basic understanding of cash handling and point-of-sale (POS) systems will be advantageous.
  • Language Ability - Ability to communicate effectively in English. Knowledge of additional local languages will be advantageous to support customer service.
  • Customer Service Orientation - Must demonstrate a customer-focused attitude and the ability to interact professionally with customers.
  • Reliability - Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work responsibly with cash and customer transactions.
  • Physical Requirements - Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform normal checkout duties associated with retail work.
  • Work Schedule Flexibility - Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays in line with retail trading hours.
