Job Description - Full Stack Engineer

Potentiam is an embedded offshoring partner that helps mid-sized businesses grow by building dedicated, office-based teams across South Africa, Romania, India and Brazil.

Our model combines the control of insourcing with the commercial advantages of offshoring. Clients retain day-to-day management of their teams while Potentiam manages recruitment, employment, HR, payroll, facilities, IT infrastructure and employee support.

We work with organisations across technology, financial services, professional services, healthcare, engineering, energy and business services, supporting functions including technology, finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer support.



Purpose of Role

The Full-stack Engineer will develop, maintain and enhance an innovative suite of AI-powered software quality and testing products.

Working across an established technology stack, the role will contribute to front-end interfaces built with React, Next.js and TypeScript, as well as Node.js services, REST APIs, SQL databases and cloud-based integrations.

The role will initially focus on understanding the existing products and architecture, resolving production defects and delivering minor enhancements. As product knowledge develops, the Full-stack Engineer will assume greater ownership of features and contribute to future product development.

Working closely with the Head of Engineering & AI, Product Owner, AI specialists and QA professionals, the successful candidate will translate requirements into reliable, maintainable and well-tested technical solutions.



Duties & Responsibilities



Full-stack Development

  • Build and maintain product features across front-end and back-end systems.

  • Develop responsive, component-based interfaces using React, Next.js and TypeScript.

  • Implement server-side logic and services using Node.js.

  • Develop and maintain RESTful APIs.

  • Work with SQL databases and support effective data handling.

  • Integrate third-party APIs, platforms and external data sources.

  • Work within an existing architecture and established coding patterns.

  • Produce maintainable, reusable and well-documented code.


Product Support & Performance

  • Investigate and resolve defects across the full technology stack.

  • Diagnose production issues using application logs, monitoring tools and production data.

  • Respond to high-priority product issues when required.

  • Identify front-end and back-end performance bottlenecks.

  • Implement enhancements without disrupting existing functionality or integrations.

  • Support the ongoing reliability and stability of the product environment.


Cloud & DevOps

  • Work with cloud-based and serverless services, preferably within Microsoft Azure.

  • Contribute to Azure Functions, queue-based services and workflow integrations.

  • Work within established GitHub and code-review processes.

  • Contribute to existing CI/CD pipelines, automated checks and deployment processes.

  • Support application monitoring, system reliability and release activities.

  • Deliver work incrementally through two-week sprints and regular production releases.


Testing & Quality

  • Incorporate automated testing into the development process.

  • Write unit and integration tests that support reliable, testable code.

  • Apply a test-driven and quality-focused mindset throughout delivery.

  • Work closely with QA and automation specialists.

  • Participate in code reviews and quality checks before deployment.

  • Support shift-left quality practices and early defect prevention.


AI & Emerging Technology

  • Use AI-assisted development tools responsibly to improve development efficiency.

  • Independently validate, test and review AI-generated output.

  • Contribute to products and services incorporating AI-enabled functionality.

  • Support the integration of AI and machine-learning services where relevant.

  • Develop knowledge of LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation and agentic AI patterns.


Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with Product, Engineering and QA colleagues to understand requirements.

  • Translate user stories and technical requirements into practical solutions.

  • Ask appropriate questions where requirements or constraints are unclear.

  • Propose ideas and explain the reasoning behind technical recommendations.

  • Communicate technical information clearly to different stakeholders.

  • Create and maintain technical documentation for systems and processes.


Skills & Experience

  • Approximately 3–5+ years of commercial full-stack development experience.

  • Strong commercial experience with React, Next.js, TypeScript and Node.js.

  • Experience developing server-side logic and RESTful APIs.

  • Solid experience working with SQL databases.

  • Experience integrating third-party APIs and external platforms.

  • Evidence of delivering production features across both front-end and back-end systems.

  • Understanding of object-oriented programming, code reuse, separation of concerns and design patterns.

  • Experience writing automated tests and developing testable code.

  • Strong debugging and technical problem-solving skills.

  • Experience using Git, pull requests and code-review processes.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices.

  • Ability to work effectively within an established product and codebase.

  • Ability to manage changing requirements and deliver work incrementally.

  • Strong internal communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

  • Ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly.

  • Responsible and effective use of AI-assisted development tools.

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is advantageous; however, equivalent commercial experience will be accepted.


Advantageous Experience

  • Commercial experience with Microsoft Azure, particularly Azure Functions.

  • Experience with AWS or Google Cloud serverless technologies.

  • Knowledge of serverless architecture, queues and workflow-based services.

  • Experience with application monitoring, production support and system reliability.

  • Experience working with NoSQL databases.

  • Familiarity with GitHub Copilot or similar AI development tools.

  • Experience integrating AI or machine-learning services.

  • Understanding of LLMs, Retrieval-Augmented Generation and agentic AI patterns.

  • Knowledge of human-in-the-loop workflows, sub-agent architecture or WebSockets.

  • Experience within software quality engineering, testing or automation environments.
