Full Stack Engineer (Android)

Job Description - Full Stack Engineer (Android)

About Stitch

Stitch is a payments infrastructure company on a mission to make it easier for enterprise businesses to connect to the financial system and build better experiences for their customers.

We are expanding the team to enable Stitch to broaden our product offering and extend our geographical footprint.

We're looking for a versatile Full Stack Engineer with strong Android experience to join the team building software that powers thousands of payment terminals used by merchants across South Africa.

While you'll initially focus on building and enhancing our Android POS platform, the software that runs on physical payment terminals, this is fundamentally a full-stack role. You'll also work in the backend services that power those terminals, and supporting infrastructure to deliver reliable, scalable payment experiences. As our products evolve you'll have opportunities to contribute across other engineering teams and stacks, so we're looking for engineers who enjoy solving complex problems regardless of where they exist in the stack.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Design, build and maintain high-quality software across our Android applications and backend services.

  2. Develop and enhance Android-based Point of Sale (POS) solutions that run on physical payment terminals and integrate seamlessly with Stitch's payment platform.

  3. Build and maintain reliable backend services that support the terminal fleet and broader platform capabilities.

  4. Collaborate with Product, Design and Engineering teams to deliver scalable, customer-focused solutions.

  5. We optimise for trust, autonomy and technical excellence. Engineers are expected to be decisive, contribute in technical planning and architecture discussions, challenge ideas constructively and continuously improve systems across the engineering team.

  6. Write clean, maintainable and well-tested code, and participate in code reviews to uphold engineering excellence.

  7. Troubleshoot production issues across both mobile and backend, optimise performance and proactively reduce technical debt.

  8. Take ownership of problems end-to-end, from understanding customer impact through design, implementation, deployment and on-call production support.

  9. Support the growth of the engineering organisation through knowledge sharing and participating in technical interviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent practical experience.

  • Strong experience in production Android application development with Kotlin.

  • Experience building and maintaining backend services in a JVM language (Java or Kotlin), Spring Boot, and/or Node.js and TypeScript

  • Experience designing and consuming REST and/or GraphQL APIs.

  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices: testing, source control, CI/CD and Agile development.

  • Fluent use of AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) in your daily workflow.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work across different parts of the technology stack.

  • Must be based in Cape Town, or willing to relocate, and able to work regularly from our Cape Town office as part of our hybrid working model.

  • Experience working in high-growth technology companies or startups.

Nice to Have

  • Experience building applications for Android payment terminals, including vendor SDKs and payment technologies, EMV, NFC, chip & PIN, magnetic-stripe card handling.

  • Familiarity with payment-security concepts, PCI, key injection (RKI), PIN encryption.

  • Familiarity with fintech or payment products more broadly.

  • Jetpack Compose (our terminal UI is Compose-first).

  • Modern Android tooling: Hilt/Dagger DI, Coroutines, Room, WorkManager, Retrofit/OkHttp.

  • Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure; Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).

  • Relational and streaming data stores: MySQL/PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka.

  • Observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog.

  • Knowledge of application security best practices.
