Job Purpose

Lead the establishment and development of the Mid-Market Private Equity (MMPE) team within Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB), responsible for the origination, execution and management of proprietary equity and equity-linked investments. Drive the build-out of a dedicated mid-market private equity capability, leveraging the BCB client base and broader Investment Banking ecosystem, to deliver sustainable risk-adjusted returns and support a full capital stack offering across the Nedbank client franchise.

Job Responsibilities

Business Leadership

• Establish and lead the Mid-Market Private Equity platform, ensuring strong financial and non-financial performance outcomes.


• Define investment strategy, sector focus and pipeline priorities aligned to CIB and BCB  objectives.


• Build a differentiated mid-market private equity franchise with a focus on proprietary deal flow.


• Provide thought leadership on mid-market investment trends, valuation dynamics and capital structuring.

Origination & Execution

• Operate in close partnership with BCB to originate transactions from the existing and target client base, leveraging relationship depth and market insight.


• Lead execution across direct equity investments, preference shares, hybrid capital structures and structured equity-linked transactions.


• Focus on relationship-led, off-market opportunities and early-stage client engagement.


• Take full accountability for deal outcomes, including structuring, pricing, execution and returns.

Capital Deployment

• Deploy equity and hybrid capital directly into transactions.


• Deploy a combination of equity and equity-like instruments to optimise downside protection, capital efficiency and exit outcomes.


• Optimise capital usage in line with agreed return thresholds and CIB capital frameworks.

Portfolio Management

• Oversee portfolio construction, performance monitoring and exits.


• Drive value creation initiatives across investments and maintain active shareholder engagement where appropriate.


• Ensure valuation discipline and performance reporting.

Client Engagement

• Build and maintain relationships with mid-market corporates, entrepreneurs, founders, sponsors and advisors.


• Lead complex client engagements, negotiations and transaction processes.

Governance & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with CIB Investment Committee, governance and regulatory frameworks.


• Ensure appropriate BCB participation in Investment Committee processes while maintaining efficient decision-making.


• Maintain disciplined underwriting standards and risk oversight.


• Provide senior input into Investment Committee submissions and decisions.

Team Development

• Build, lead and scale a high-performing mid market private equity team with strong origination and execution capability.


• Establish clear performance expectations and accountability aligned to investment outcomes.


• Drive talent development, succession planning and retention of key skills.


• Foster a performance-driven, entrepreneurial culture within a disciplined governance environment.

Essential Qualifications

• Relevant Honour's Degree


• Preferred: CA(SA), CFA, MBA or equivalent

Minimum Experience Level

• 10–15 years’ experience in private equity or principal investing.


• Proven track record of originating and executing mid-market transactions.


• Proven ability to generate proprietary deal flow.


• Experience building or scaling investment platforms advantageous.
