The University of Cape Town and the Department of Health and Wellness of the Western Cape Government invite applications for this permanent post of Head of Division of Radiology in the Department of Radiation Medicine within UCT’s world-leading Faculty, for appointment as soon as possible.

The Faculty of Health Sciences’ vision is to be a centre of excellence in health sciences that is locally relevant and globally competitive. Established in 1912, the Faculty is a leading faculty of Health Sciences on the African continent. The mission of the Faculty of Health and Sciences is carried out in close collaboration with the Department of Health and Wellness of the Western Cape Provincial Government. Governed by a dynamic bilateral agreement, the faculty and the province seek to enhance the wellness of the people of the Western Cape through the ethos of learning while serving and serving while learning. To this end, the Head of Division of Radiology, will be appointed as joint staff at University of Cape Town, and will be responsible for staff and services at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) and Red Cross war memorial Children’s Hospital (RCWMCH) but will be required to develop and provide oversight of the broader provincial radiation medicine platform.

Radiology represents a critical discipline which interacts across multiple clinical domains. Globally the influence of cutting-edge technology cannot be ignored. The rapid innovation within the technology of the discipline of the immobility offered to diagnostics, radiology demands leaders who are both agile and adaptive, capable of complex management approaches coupled with the ability to lead teams of people with varying capacity.

The Head of Division of Radiology will lead and manage the transition from a tertiary Radiology system, to a platform-based eco-system (GSH, RXH, Victoria hospital, Somerset hospital and Mitchell's Plain and beyond), mindful of the realities of the Western Cape and with the purpose of taking the Radiology department into the future. They should have a demonstrated record of innovation, and management of complex imaging systems as well as commitment to education and research.

This person should show a nuanced understanding of the national South African context and its potential contribution to continental and global development. Such leadership will include responsibilities for service provision, teaching, training, research and social accountability. The head of Radiology should be someone who has trained and mentored others, not necessarily through formal academic teaching, but through hands-on knowledge transfer and building capability in the people and systems around them.

The Head of Division must work with both university and provincial structures to create a dynamic forward-thinking strategic vision and mission and effective operational plan for the division and the department of Radiation Medicine, which resonates with the needs of communities as well as both the university and government priorities. The essence of headship is to give academic and clinical leadership to the department, to be committed to its service platforms, scholarship, teaching, and standards, to develop its staff, and to maintain it as well-functioning academic and clinical department.

Requirements

• A qualification that is registerable with the HPCSA as a specialist Radiologist


• At least 5 years’ experience as a qualified and registered Radiologist


• A demonstrable record of scholarship


• Evidence of experience in the leadership and management of a large department or practice with prior responsibilities for clinical service delivery, teaching, training and/or research


• Knowledge of the health sector in South Africa and insight into the challenges and opportunities for advancing health care in South Africa and Africa


• Demonstrated ability as a manager of a complex Radiology team for at least 3 years


• Demonstrated record of mentoring/teaching of other radiologist through formal/informal modes of teaching and/or teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within the academic context and beyond.


• Demonstrated record of innovation and management of complex imaging systems as well as commitment to education and research.


• Demonstrated approach to the scholarship of radiology with evidence of engagement and research development and applications. This may be evidenced in an innovative portfolio of evidence.


• National reputation as a leader in their discipline.


• Track record of teamwork and building effective partnerships with internal, external and international stakeholders.


• Track record for mentorship and educational engagement for staff and/or students.


• Track record of experience in change management and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic oversight and implementation of the plan to develop a cross-platform Radiology service in the service area.


• Provide vision and strategic oversight to develop a modern Radiology service which supports future innovation.


• Provide leadership and coordinate the clinical service, postgraduate education and training, and research, promoting a multidisciplinary approach in the department


• Provide leadership in the department and manage its staff, resources and performance (service and academic), inspiring innovation and growth Provide leadership in addressing diversity, transformation, inclusivity and equity, attracting and developing students and staff of high quality


• Provide leadership with demonstrable capacity for role modelling, professionalism and collegial engagement


• Be responsible for overseeing clinical governance and relevant legislative mandates in line with provincial service delivery platforms and regulations


• Will be expected to be an active clinician, participating actively in the clinical service and working closely with hospital management


• Will be expected to be a productive academic, driving research and overseeing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training


• Demonstrate social responsiveness through outreach, policy, health systems development and engagement with other stakeholders including government and civil society organisations.

This permanent post is on the establishment of the University of Cape Town under the Joint Agreement with the Western Cape Government. 

The academic level of this appointment will be made in alignment with the candidate's current position, level of experience as well as the Faculty’s expectations for performance at each academic rank. This post will be appointed at the level of Associate or Full Professor cognisant of the promotion criteria of the Faculty. The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is appropriate to Head of Clinical Department.
