The Position
The Head of Programme (HOP) for the MBA is a senior academic accountable for the academic integrity and compliance of a programme suite. The HOP ensures curriculum coherence, assessment standards, and governance documentation remain current and aligned to institutional policy and external criteria.
In the Business School, the Head of Programme and as such, are responsible for supporting business targets, whilst being fully accountable for the academic project and the student experience on their programmes.
Responsibilities and tasks
1. Academic Governance & Compliance
- Set programme documentation and ensure that PM maintains programme documentation and monitor evidence of accurate implementation: outcomes mapping, assessment strategy, Set, manage and monitor implementation of qualification level policies such as Admission, CAT, rules of progression; Work-Integrated Learning (where applicable).
- Run programme oversight meetings for every cycle of intake per annum and ensure academic governance is adhered to on a programme level.
- Provide programme level reports to Senate, School Academic Boards, Academic Governance Committees
- Prepare and ensure quality submissions for programme accreditation/reaccreditation.
- Lead SME during programme reviews.
- Lead programme level innovation.
- Sign off as “Head of Department” for assessment setting (accountable for quality of assessments and results) and results release processes.
- Approve the appointment of external moderators on a programme level.
- Sign-off annual programme level system configuration (academic owners must own the module level detail, but the POM must ensure that overall, it aligns with the programme design and what is practical for students and meet Milpark policies and procedures).
2. Industry Engagement & External Relationships
- Determine academic schedule for programme (for some elements, the programme design as well as the Deputy Registrar will be the guiding factor or ultimate decisionmaker).
- Coordinate induction sessions at the start of every intake.
- Recruit, onboard and performance manage adjunct faculty for modules on programme where we do not have a full-time lecturer (academic owner) assigned.
- Ensure website is up to date for programme level information.
- Inform and train all relevant departments on programme level changes or to improve their knowledge in general.
3. Industry Engagement & External Relationships
- Keep close relationships with industry bodies, identify new ones and pursue partnerships.
- Involve and integrate industry feedback.
- Partner with Chief Commercial Officer for corporate partner solutions if the programme is core to the offering.
- Arrange industry experts as guest lecturers. ensure innovation and relevance.
4. Student Success & Analytics
- Track and act on student analytics (at-risk, progression rules).
- Accountable and responsible for programme level communication takes place and support sessions are held – on MBA this sits within the modules LDEV and on the PGDBA in LMAN.
- Assist students with content-related queries and deal with requests for extra student support.
5. Marketing, Recruitment & Commercial Support
- Support marketing and sales initiatives on a programme level (this requires a proactive mindset).
- Lead webinars for new student recruitment.
- Conduct interviews with potential candidates (where applicable, such as the MBA)
6. Teaching and learning
- Deliver engaging and high-quality synchronous lectures on assigned modules. Classes will be scheduled outside of core business hours to accommodate part-time students.
- Support the design of asynchronous content and take responsibility for updating and refreshing content, ensuring alignment with industry trends and academic best practices.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation, curiosity and critical thinking.
- Implement the assessment policy and procedures of Milpark in line with HEQC requirements on assigned modules and subjects.
- Draft for assigned subjects across modules within timelines as required.
- Conduct marking, internal moderation and signing off of marks on assigned modules.
- Take responsibility for all learning material as well as subject-related information loaded on myMilpark.
- Build good relationships with internal departments and part-time academics.
- Serve on relevant academic committees.
- Supervise and mentor students in their academic and professional development.
7. Customer Service
- Be available for student consultation in terms of an agreed schedule after hours.
- Address student academic queries and disputes.
- Consult with marketing and administrative departments in connection with student evaluation and feedback.
- Maintain professional relationships with all Milpark management and staff.
8. Research
- Conduct research and produce publications or other research outputs in line with departmental objectives.
- May assist with the research of students and faculty.
- May act as supervisor and/or marker for student research in field of expertise.
9. Take accountability for own development
- Expand own expertise on continuous basis.
- Attend workshops, conferences, etc. in order to stay abreast of developments in field of expertise.
- Engage with the professional and academic communities.
Education and experience requirements
- A DBA or MBA in Business Administration, PhD or Master’s-degree in Management or a related field.
- Teaching experience at the postgraduate level OR practical business management or leadership experience.
- A track record of research and publications in relevant academic journals (preferably but not required).
