Job Description - IT Independent Infrastructure Consultant

Potentiam is a fast-growing global offshore solutions provider connecting top talent with leading UK and European businesses. With offices across South Africa, Romania, India, and Brazil, we offer international exposure, real career progression, and the opportunity to work with high-performing global teams.

We combine global opportunity with local support - giving you the chance to grow, make an impact, and build a long-term career in a business that’s scaling fast.

Global clients. Clear progression. Real opportunity.

Purpose of Role

This is a three(3) phase project-based role to support the relocation of company offices across 3 floors, planned for approximately 250 users.

Act as Potentiam’s independent technical representative on site. Assess the physical building infrastructure, review the fit-out design against actual conditions, identify constraints and risks, and help the CIO make an informed technical decision. The consultant will recommend and verify work; technical sign-off, spend and change approval remain with Potentiam’s CIO.  The IT infrastructure consultant will assess the site, validate the proposed design and provide on-site assurance through installation and handover.

Duties & Responsibilities

Phase 1 Site assessment and design validation

  • Survey occupied floors and relevant shared building infrastructure with the landlord’s building manager.

  • Assess fibre entry and ISP options, route diversity, risers and containment between floors, and any landlord restrictions on routes, drilling or rooftop equipment.

  • Assess the proposed primary IT communications room and smaller secondary room, including rack space, secure access, cooling, fire detection, dedicated electrical supply, earthing, UPS and generator coverage. Confirm with the appointed fire engineer whether fire-rated construction is required and what rating applies.

  • Review structured cabling, workstation connectivity, Wi-Fi coverage and capacity, inter-floor fibre/uplinks, power and cooling for approximately 250 users.

  • Review the logical and physical architecture, including independent floor networks, routing, VLAN segmentation, corporate and guest wireless isolation, secure management access, capacity and resilient ISP design. The CIO retains approval of firewall policies, IP plans and security controls.

  • Inventory existing Cape Town assets, including FortiGate firewalls, Aruba switches and access points, licences, UPS and related equipment. Assess suitability for reuse, relocation or replacement, support status and cost implications.

  • Identify technical interfaces with BCX and other providers, building-related constraints and commercial items that may be raised with the landlord.

  • Provide a site assessment report with photographs, design validation report, recommended changes, technical specifications, risk and constraint register, and equipment reuse/replace assessment.

Phase 2 Implementation oversight

  • Attend agreed milestones such as first fix, communications-room build, second fix and pre-handover.

  • Check installation quality against the CIO-approved design and specification; witness critical cabling, rack, power, fibre and equipment milestones.

  • Record dated photographs, deviations, defects, owners and recommended actions, and escalate issues that may affect cost, timeline or security within one working day.

  • Coordinate technical matters with the contractor, landlord and ISPs as directed by the CIO. Support equipment relocation and cutover planning.

  • Review cutover, rollback and out-of-hours migration plans. The consultant cannot approve variations, spend, outages or technical changes.

Phase 3 Independent validation and hadover

  • Witness or review cabling certification and test results; complete or review a post-installation Wi-Fi survey on both floors.

  • Witness practical acceptance tests for wired and wireless connectivity, corporate/guest isolation, inter-floor links, ISP failover, UPS/generator transition and recovery.

  • Review the operational handover pack: as-built diagrams, rack elevations, cable and patch schedules, IP/VLAN matrix, asset and serial-number register, warranty/support records, configuration-backup evidence and access ownership.

  • Produce a snagging list, track close-out and issue a written independent assurance opinion that separates critical blockers, remedial actions and non-critical observations.

  • Recommend sign-off or state what must be corrected first. Final acceptance remains with the CIO. Do not request or retain credentials.

  • Reporting and information handling

  • Join a weekly virtual progress call with the CIO, allowing for the South Africa–India time difference.

  • Submit a written report within two working days of each site visit.

  • Escalate issues affecting cost, timeline or security to the CIO within one working day.

  • Work within the CIO’s technical direction and Potentiam’s existing architecture, security standards, scalability needs and relocation strategy.

  • Sign Potentiam’s NDA before receiving drawings or network information. Handle project information securely and do not request or retain credentials.

Skills & Abilities

  • At least 10 years of IT infrastructure experience, including design or validation of office networks supporting 200 or more users.

  • Demonstrable experience with commercial office relocations and multi-floor fit-outs in South Africa; Cape Town experience is preferred.

  • Strong working knowledge of structured cabling standards such as ISO/IEC 11801 or TIA-568, enterprise Wi-Fi, switching, routing and communications-room design.

  • Experience assessing building-side infrastructure, including risers, fibre entry, electrical capacity, backup power and cooling.

  • Able to attend site in Cape Town at short notice and provide concise, actionable written reports for a remote CIO.

  • Professional certifications such as CCNP, CWNA or BICSI RCDD are advantageous. Experience with remote/offshore IT leadership, multi-site security standards and comparable references is also desirable.
