For more than 20 years, Globeleq has been a long-term investor, developer, owner and operator of diversified power projects in Africa, where the company is one of the largest Independent Power Producers., With nearly 1500MW of generation capacity in operation across 16 power plants in 7 countries, 488MW of new power projects in construction and >2,000MW in development, Globeleq is one of the largest independent power producers solely focused in Africa. Globeleq is 70% owned by British International Investment and 30% by Norfund, the development finance institutions of the UK and Norway, and has a proven track record for supporting the ongoing development of the African power sector.
Globeleq’s various generation technologies include gas, wind, solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), and geothermal. The company is also actively pursuing new opportunities which are emerging from the energy transition, including desalination projects powered by renewables, as well as green hydrogen and ammonia projects.
Globeleq is hiring an IT Specialist who will take the lead in developing and maintaining the corporate infrastructure supporting the GSAMS team that maintains and manages RE power plants throughout South Africa and Africa. The role will be responsible for key server and software infrastructure, as well as escalated desktop support.

The role supports remote sites throughout South Africa, so it would require occasional travel to these sites. The role would also include occasional international travel to Globeleq power plants in Africa.

The position is located at our Cape Town corporate office.

Key Responsibilities

Set up, and maintain business-critical infrastructure, such as server and backup infrastructure, network infrastructure (switches, firewalls & wi-fi), Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, etc.

  • Carry out the installation of new systems whenever existing infrastructure needs to be updated or for new site implementations

  • Perform continuous maintenance of all existing infrastructure to maintain high standards and availability while following security best practices

  • Perform routine monitoring and maintenance such as backups or changes to configuration in line with change management best practices

  • Maintain the IT ticket platform and update logs when the work is carried out during installations, changes to the configuration or during general maintenance on the server, storage, switch, firewall, wi-fi and any other infrastructure systems

Enforce policies that maintain the integrity of the infrastructure and support cyber-security initiatives.

  • Together with the IT Manager and Senior Infrastructure Specialist, support the implementation of backup policies and strategies for servers, desktops, wi-fi, switches, firewalls, and other critical equipment

  • Ensure critical and security patches are routinely applied to infrastructure and user computers

  • Ensure IT policies and procedures are enforced and escalate any significant and persistent breaches to the relevant parties

  • Participate in the development and review of IT disaster recovery documentation, systems manuals, and IT procedures

Support capital projects and other focused or continuous improvement projects related to the infrastructure.

  • Identify, motivate, and implement capital projects supporting business objectives or as part of routine maintenance

  • Support and implement corporate infrastructure projects that are run at Globeleq group level for GSAMS

  • Support and implement any other continuous or focused improvement projects that drive the operational efficiency of the IT Team

Provide general escalated support and administration support within the team.

  • Provide infrastructure support for the power plant’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and technical input to the engineering teams that maintain these systems

  • Provide level 2 and level 3 support to our external support vendor providing Level 1 desktop support to GSAMS users

  • Troubleshoot and support together with an external vendor the video conferencing units and IP telephony

  • Troubleshoot and support together with an external vendor the networking infrastructure

  • Work with the external hardware server and network infrastructure vendors to troubleshoot faulty hardware and coordinate hardware replacements under warranty

  • Complete administration activities such as maintaining an IT asset inventory of hardware and software in GSAMS. Monitor renewals for hardware and software licensing and hardware warranties

  • Engage with Group IT in implementing technology to support and improve the organisation's business activities

  • Any other tasks delegated by the line manager in line with the role

  • Willing to develop skills further, specifically in developing skills in IT infrastructure and software

  • Good knowledge of Windows server infrastructure. This includes technologies such as: Active Directory, DNS, ADUC, Group Policy, DHCP, ADDS, Azure AD Connect, ADFS, Reverse Proxy

  • Good network skills, ability to troubleshoot and set up firewall rules; VLANs, NAT, QoS, TCP/IP, SIP, RTP, etc.


Experience, Knowledge and Qualifications

The following are required for the role:

  • Minimum 3 years' relevant work experience

  • Must currently have an MSCE (Core Infrastructure) certification or have been actively working in the related area for 3 years' or more

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in virtualisation technologies, for example, Hyper-V or VMWare

  • Must have good knowledge and support expertise in Microsoft Windows 7/10/11, Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019/2022 technologies; 4 years for Desktop OS or more and 3 years' for Server OS or more

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years' of hands-on experience in MS Cloud-based technologies, such as Microsoft 365, ADFS, Teams, Azure, etc.

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years' of hands-on experience supporting VEEAM backup software

  • Experience with the setup and management of Network Attached Storage (NAS) or Storage Attached Networking (SAN). Dell and QNAP would be advantageous

  • A good understanding of LAN/WAN technologies (CCNA or JNCIA certification or equivalent)

  • Must have some experience supporting Microsoft SharePoint environment

The following are advantageous for the role:

  • A VMWare (VCP) certification

  • Experience setting up FortiGate Firewalls and any FortiGate Certifications NSE 1 to 7

  • Any Unix/Linux OS experience
