Learning Designer

Applications are invited for the Learning Designer position at Herotel.
This position will be based at Stellenbosch and will report to the Head of Learning and Development.

About the role:
The Learning Designer will be responsible for designing and developing effective learning solutions and engaging materials to address organisational learning needs. This role involves spending time in an operational work environment and collaborating with stakeholders to understand organisational context and needs in order to craft customised programmes. The Learning Designer is responsible for creating effective learning experiences. This role focuses on designing the full set of instructional content, design as well as activities that facilitate learning and enhance learning outcomes.

Key Responsibility Areas will include but not be limited to:

• Partner with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to identify training needs and define clear learning objectives.
• Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and audience analyses to ensure training solutions are tailored to organisational requirements.
• Design curricula, programmes, and learning solutions aligned with identified needs and strategic goals.
• Develop and implement a variety of instructional materials, including e-learning modules, videos, job aids, simulations, and assessments.
• Apply established instructional design models and adult learning principles to create engaging, learner-centric content.Build learning frameworks and content development blueprints to streamline development and ensure standardisation across materials.
• Create detailed storyboards to outline visual, interactive, and narrative elements, ensuring cohesive and effective content flow.
• Utilise a range of instructional strategies and technologies to deliver training across digital platforms, including (Learning Management Systems) LMSs and virtual learning.
• Administer learning content through LMS and similar platforms, ensuring accurate delivery and tracking of training initiatives.
• Design and implement course assessments that measure learner progress, knowledge retention, and overall training effectiveness.
• Evaluate training impact through feedback, analytics, and performance metrics; use insights to refine and improve content.
• Maintain and update training materials to reflect evolving technologies, processes, and industry best practices.
• Adhere to brand and style guidelines to ensure consistency across all learning assets.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with trainers, SMEs, and key stakeholders to ensure successful rollout and adoption of training initiatives.

• Clear and actionable learning objectives developed in collaboration with SMEs in alignment with organisational goals.
• Comprehensive needs assessments and audience analyses to guide content development and training design.
• Storyboards that serve as detailed visual and instructional guides for content development.
• Instructional materials, including designed and developed multimedia assets, that support diverse learning preferences and modalities.
• Targeted learning interventions that address specific skill or knowledge gaps.
  
• Structured and scalable course content administered effectively through LMS/similar platforms.
• Microlearning or mobile-friendly content.
• Course assessments that accurately measure learner achievement and programme effectiveness.
• Regular evaluations of training programmes with recommendations for improvement.
• Up-to-date learning materials that remain relevant amidst technological and procedural changes.
• Cohesive training experiences that reflect consistent branding and instructional quality.

Work Experience and Competency Requirements:

Work Experience:

• Adult learning theory (e.g., Andragogy, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Kirkpatrick Model).
• Instructional design methodologies (ADDIE, SAM, Agile learning).
• Curriculum development and learning path design.
• Digital learning trends and best practices.
• Assessment and evaluation strategies.
• Knowledge of South African education and training frameworks:
  - SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority).
  - NQF (National Qualifications Framework).

Competencies:

• Proficiency in eLearning authoring tools: Articulate Storyline, Rise and similar.
• Skilled in using Learning Management Systems (LMS): Moodle, Blackboard, or eFront, Talent LMS.
• Ability to use graphic design or multimedia tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Vyond).
• Storyboarding and prototyping learning materials.
• Assessment and quiz design.
• Data-driven design: interpreting learning analytics to inform improvements.

• Strong communication and writing skills (plain language and instructional clarity).
• Project management and organisational skills.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving.
• Stakeholder engagement and collaboration.
• Change management and facilitation (especially when launching new training initiatives).
• Cultural sensitivity and ability to design for diverse learners (considering language, access, context).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
• Knowledge of the telecommunications industry is desirable.

Education Requirements:

• A Bachelor's Degree in Education, PGCE, and/or Instructional Design, Learning Design, or related qualification.
• Additional certifications or training in Instructional Design, e-Learning Development, or related areas or at least 3 years proven experience as a Learning Experience Designer/similar.
