Job Description - Mine Closure Consultant

Digby Wells Environmental is a leading environmental
and social consulting firm supporting the responsible development of Africa’s
natural resources. We partner with mining clients across Africa to achieve
operational success with sustainable environmental management and acceptable social
outcomes.

We
are looking for a Mine Closure Consultant with experience in mine closure
planning and mine closure cost assessments to join our team supporting projects
in Tanzania and across East Africa. Landform modelling and rehabilitation
design experience will also be beneficial. This role offers the opportunity to
contribute to practical, responsible and regulatory-compliant mine closure
solutions across a diverse portfolio of mining projects.

The
successful candidate will develop mine closure strategies and liability
assessments, support closure, decommissioning and rehabilitation projects, and
contribute to practical and sustainable closure landforms. The role combines
technical delivery, project management and collaboration with multidisciplinary
specialists, clients and regulatory authorities. It offers meaningful

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct
    and develop mine closure cost estimates, mine closure plans, closure and
    rehabilitation strategies and post-closure land-use planning.

  • Develop
    or contribute to practical closure landform models and designs for waste rock
    dumps, tailings facilities, pits, stockpiles and other disturbed areas,
    considering drainage, slopes, erosion control, constructability and long-term
    stability.

  • Generate
    and interpret terrain models, survey data, engineering designs, GIS
    information, cut-and-fill assessments and earthworks quantities for closure
    planning and costing.

  • Prepare
    technical reports and input for closure, decommissioning, environmental authorisation
    and regulatory approval processes, including the regulatory engagement where
    applicable.

  • Monitor
    and evaluate closure and rehabilitation performance and provide technical
    guidance to clients.

  • Manage
    closure-related project activities to ensure delivery on time, within budget
    and to quality standards.

  • Conduct
    fieldwork and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, clients and regulatory
    authorities.


Requirements

  • Experience
    in mine closure planning, closure cost estimates, rehabilitation design and
    post-mining land-use planning.

  • Practical
    experience in landform modelling, terrain design or earthworks modelling within
    mining, mine closure, civil engineering or environmental consulting will be
    beneficial.

  • Proficiency
    in relevant modelling, design and spatial software such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD,
    ArcGIS, QGIS, Global Mapper or similar; mine planning software would be
    advantageous.

  • Ability
    to interpret engineering designs, survey information, mine plans and spatial
    data, and develop earthworks quantities and design inputs.

  • Understanding
    drainage, erosion and sediment control, slope shaping, material balances,
    practical rehabilitation techniques and legal and best practice mine closure
    requirements.

  • Strong
    technical report writing, numerical and analytical ability, with willingness to
    undertake fieldwork at mining operations and remote locations.

  • Training
    or demonstrated competence in CAD, GIS, spatial analysis, terrain modelling or
    mine planning software would be advantageous

  • Professional registration or membership with a
    recognised professional body (e.g., Engineers Registration Board, NEMC, or
    equivalent international accreditation) would be advantageous.

  • Valid driver’s license and passport.
Skills
  • Strong numerical,
    analytical and problem-solving ability, with excellent attention to detail.

  • Clear technical writing and
    confident verbal and written communication.

  • Effective project, time and
    priority management across multiple assignments and deadlines.

  • Ability to work
    independently, collaborate across disciplines and build trusted clients and
    stakeholder relationships.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s
    degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering,
    Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Science another relevant technical
    discipline, with demonstrated experience in mine closure planning and
    rehabilitation design.
     

Experience

  • Three to five years of in
    mine closure planning rehabilitation techniques or related environmental
    consulting.

  • Demonstrated experience
    supporting or developing mine closure plans and closure cost assessments.

  • Practical experience in
    landform modelling, rehabilitation design or earthworks design would be
    beneficial.

  • Experience in a consulting
    environment and on African or international mining projects would be
    advantageous.
