JOB TITLE:                                                Regional Nurse

DURATION:                                             12 months

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

  • The nurse will support the Regional Medical Officer and Staff Counsellor in overseeing staff health and safety. This role will involve reviewing medical and casualty response protocols, assessing health, safety, and environmental conditions affecting WFP staff and offices, and delivering training in hygiene, safety, and personal first aid. Additionally, the nurse will contribute to professional capacity building within the organization.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receive, review, and prioritize all incoming materials, ensuring that essential items are highlighted and accompanied by relevant background information before being integrated into the digital medical files for the Medical Officer’s attention.
  • Operationalize the RBJ Travel Clinic, including the preparation and distribution of travel health kits for staff scheduled for duty travel, as well as providing destination-specific health advice.
  • Advise staff on vaccination requirements, including referrals to travel health clinics in Johannesburg for vaccinations, and conduct vaccination campaigns at the regional bureau and country offices.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality when handling sensitive medical issues.
  • Receive clients, arrange consultations, and respond to medical-administrative inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Prepare correspondence of a medical and semi-technical nature as required.
  • Provide administrative support for travel, training, and other operational activities related to the Medical Officer's duties when necessary.
  • Utilize the Occupational Health electronic record system to manage staff health records efficiently.
  • Process mission requests, recruitment, periodic, and exit examinations, ensuring that all medical files are complete and accurate.
  • Handle requests for medical evacuations of staff, ensuring proper documentation and procedures are followed.
  • Manage all documentation related to travel kits, maternity leave, sick leave, and forward necessary sick leave notices to administration and timekeepers.
  • Consolidate and report on health-related statistics including mortality, morbidity, evacuations, service-incurred accidents, sick leave, compensation claims, and disability cases for the countries under your responsibility.
  • Implement staff health training and awareness campaigns, covering topics such as COVID-19, HIV/AID, malaria prevention, first aid, and other relevant medical issues.
  • Participate in the pre-planning of WFP’s emergency response operations, ensuring that health considerations are integrated into logistics and operational planning to provide appropriate protection measures for WFP staff.
  • Propose, assess, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for staff protection, particularly in higher-risk occupational settings such as food distributions, ports, warehouses with casual laborers, drivers, and cleaners.
  • Evaluate and facilitate staff access to medical facilities at the regional referral center in Johannesburg, ensuring they receive appropriate care.
  • Collaborate with health actors to provide recommended staff vaccinations and ensure first aid kits are properly adapted to meet specific needs.
  • Assess and respond to increases in disease incidents among WFP staff, including assessing disease outbreaks or environmental hazards that could impact WFP operations, and recommend appropriate mitigating measures.
  • Confidentially identify staff experiencing stress or other psychological concerns and coordinate assistance with the Regional Staff Counsellor and the UNDSS Counsellor as appropriate.
  • Coordinate all actions with the Regional Director, Country Director, Medical Officers, and Staff Counsellor to ensure a unified approach to staff health and safety.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  • Establish and coordinate the RBJ travel clinic. Deliverables will include number of staff consulted for vaccinations, number of travel kits administered, number of referrals, trainings conducted and cardiovascular risk awareness campaigns done in the regional bureau and country offices.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:                   A tertiary qualification in public health nursing or other healthcare qualifications. Should be licensed to practice in South Africa.

  • Professional trainer’s certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Experience:                 Have vast experience in outbreak response and emergencies

  • At least 5 years of progressive professional experience in healthcare
  • Creation of training programs and campaigns
  • Workshop & presentation training

Knowledge & Skills:

·Lead, develop and implement outbreak related trainings

  • Conduct remote outbreaks related services for field offices
  • Analyse and advice on work-related health issues related to disease outbreaks , providing risk factors and solutions

Languages:                       English. Knowledge of french would be an additional advantage
