Operations Manager - Construction

An established commercial fit-out contractor specialising in whiteboxing, tenant installations and shopfitting is looking for an Operations Manager to oversee day-to-day operations, lead the team and manage the HR and finance functions. The role reports to the Managing Director and combines office and site work.

Requirements:

• National Diploma or Diploma in Construction Management, Operations or Business Management, or a related field (degree advantageous)
• Minimum 3 years' experience in commercial fit-out, shopfitting, whiteboxing, tenant installation or interior construction
• Proven leadership experience, with the ability to manage a team of 12 direct reports
• Experience working alongside project managers and site teams across multiple concurrent projects
• Working knowledge of SA labour law (BCEA, LRA) and sound people-management practice, including disciplinary processes
• Ability to read financial reports and manage budgets, job costing and cash flow, and to work with external accountants
• Knowledge of the OHS Act and site safety compliance (SAMTRAC or similar advantageous)
• Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel
• Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport, with willingness to travel to branch and client sites
• Strong communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills

Duties and responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations and ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to quality standards
• Lead, coach and manage direct reports, including performance management and discipline
• Work with the Project Manager to plan resources, labour and subcontractors across projects
• Oversee the HR function: contracts, leave, attendance, onboarding and labour-law compliance
• Oversee the finance function: monitor budgets and job costs, review management reports, and liaise with external accountants on bookkeeping and statutory matters
• Ensure health and safety, quality and client compliance on all sites
• Visit branch and client installation sites as required
• Report to the Managing Director on operational and financial performance
