About Our Client

Our client is an established organisation operating within the passenger transport and fleet services sector. The company maintains a sizeable fleet of commercial vehicles and is committed to high standards of vehicle safety, workmanship, reliability and operational efficiency.

They are seeking an experienced and qualified Vehicle Spray Painter and Panel Beater to join their Johannesburg depot workshop.

Position Overview

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing professional spray-painting and panel-beating work on coaches, trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles.

The position requires a technically competent, safety-conscious and dependable individual who can complete vehicle repairs to a high standard, work according to workshop schedules and conduct quality checks throughout the repair and refinishing process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess vehicle body damage and determine the appropriate repair process.
  • Complete panel-beating repairs on damaged vehicle panels and bodywork.
  • Repair, reshape, straighten or replace damaged panels and vehicle components.
  • Prepare vehicle surfaces for painting, including sanding, filling, masking and priming.
  • Mix and match paint colours accurately.
  • Apply primers, base coats and finishing coats using approved spray-painting techniques.
  • Identify and correct paint defects and imperfections using the appropriate methods.
  • Ensure a professional and consistent finish on all completed vehicles.
  • Conduct quality checks throughout each stage of the repair process.
  • Maintain the spray booth in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating requirements.
  • Check and clean spray-booth filters to ensure sufficient airflow.
  • Inspect air-supply equipment and report any faults or maintenance requirements.

  • Use hand tools, power tools and mechanical inspection equipment safely and correctly.
  • Ensure that the required protective clothing and personal protective equipment are worn and properly maintained.
  • Comply with all occupational health and safety policies and workshop procedures.
  • Ensure that every vehicle has an authorised job card and is correctly checked into the workshop.
  • Complete the required job-card information and repair documentation accurately.
  • Follow workshop planning schedules and complete allocated work within agreed timelines.
  • Assist other workshop employees when no specific job allocation is available.
  • Support, mentor and provide practical guidance to apprentices where required.
  • Assist with workshop-related customer or operational queries in the Workshop Manager’s absence.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and ensure that tools, equipment and work areas are kept clean and orderly.
  • Report punctually for duty and maintain accurate timekeeping.
  • Participate in standby duties and work after operationally required.


Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10 or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Recognised qualification or trade certification as a Vehicle Spray Painter, Panel Beater, or both.
  • Demonstrated experience completing both spray-painting and panel-beating work.
  • Sound knowledge of vehicle surface preparation.
  • Knowledge of automotive paint products, materials and application techniques.
  • Ability to mix and match colours accurately.
  • Knowledge of panel repair, body preparation and vehicle refinishing processes.
  • Understanding of workshop health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools and relevant workshop equipment.
  • South African citizenship or valid authorisation to work in South Africa.

Advantageous Experience

  • Approximately five years’ experience as a Vehicle Spray Painter or Panel Beater within a large commercial workshop.
  • Experience working on coaches, buses, trucks or other heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
  • Experience working in a high-volume fleet maintenance environment.
  • A valid Code EC or EC1 (04) driver’s license.
  • Previous experience workshop employees.

Working Conditions

This is a hands-on, depot-based workshop position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working around commercial vehicles, workshop machinery, paint products and repair equipment. The position may include standby duties, overtime and weekend work depending on operational requirements.
