Job Description

Job Position : Quality Engineer - Automotive Domain

Job Location : Kariega, South Africa

Key Objective : 

  • Customer complaints / incidents (volume, recurrence)
  • PPM / FPY / Scrap & Rework cost on assigned perimeter
  • On-time closure of 8D actions and audit findings
  • Process capability indices (Cp/Cpk) on key characteristics
  • APQP / PPAP on-time & right-first-time for engineering changes and new product introductions
  • Audit performance (IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, ISO 9001, Layered Process Audit.

Key Task :

  • Quality Planning & Industrialisation
  • Lead or contribute to APQP deliverables (Control Plan, PFMEA, MSA, SPC plans).
  • Support PPAP submissions (Level 3 or as required) and ensure evidence quality and completeness.
  • Validate measurement systems (MSA: GR&R, Bias, Linearity, Stability).
  • Participate in process capability studies and ensure capability is sustained (Cp/Cpk).
  • Mission

  • Ensure robust product and process quality performance for assigned areas, by deploying automotive quality standards, leading structured problem-solving, and driving continuous improvement to meet customer, regulatory and corporate requirements.
  •  

    Key tasks

  • Quality Planning & Industrialisation
  • Lead or contribute to APQP deliverables (Control Plan, PFMEA, MSA, SPC plans).
  • Support PPAP submissions (Level 3 or as required) and ensure evidence quality and completeness.
  • Validate measurement systems (MSA: GR&R, Bias, Linearity, Stability).
  • Participate in process capability studies and ensure capability is sustained (Cp/Cpk).
  • Process & Product Quality Control
  • Implement and monitor SPC on critical characteristics; react to trends and out-of-control situations.
  • Define sampling plans, inspection standards and escalation rules.
  • Conduct Layered Process Audits and product audits; follow through on corrective actions.
  • Problem Solving & Non-Conformities
  • Lead 8D / QRQC routines with cross-functional teams (Production, Maintenance, Engineering, Suppliers).
  • Contain, investigate root causes (5 Why, Ishikawa), deploy corrective & preventive actions, and verify effectiveness.
  • Manage internal rejects, scrap and rework processes; ensure proper disposition and traceability.
  • Change & Deviation Management
  • Assess quality risks for engineering changes (ECR/ECN) and ensure quality planning is updated.
  • Manage temporary deviations and ensure robust exit plans.
  • Customer & Internal Stakeholder Interface
  • Support customer audit/visit preparation and response (incl. VW Group internal).
  • Prepare and present quality performance dashboards and status to management.
  • Collaborate closely with Supplier Quality to ensure incoming quality robustness and supplier containment, when needed.
  • Standards, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure compliance with IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, ISO 9001, and Volkswagen Group standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement (Lean/Kaizen) to reduce variation, improve FPY and reduce quality costs.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and standardisation across lines/shifts.
  • Technical
  • Solid knowledge of IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, ISO 9001
  • Mastery of APQP, PPAP, FMEA (DFMEA/PFMEA), MSA, Control Plans, SPC
  • Structured problem-solving: 8D, 5 Why, Ishikawa, QRQC
  • Statistical tools (e.g. Minitab or equivalent)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes (machining, assembly, welding, heat treatment, painting, etc.) and GD&T
  • Knowledge of VW Group standards & systems (advantageous.

Qualifications

BEng / BSc in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent 4/5 years Higher Education Diploma)
