The Position
The position falls within the Postgraduate Department of the School of Professional Accounting (formerly known as CA Connect). We are looking to appoint a Senior Lecturer for the Financial Reporting (FREP) team. The ideal candidate will be technically strong, have several years’ experience delivering Financial Reporting at a PGDA level and be competent in setting assessments for PGDA students.
The FREP team is responsible for all aspects of delivering financial reporting in the SAICA-accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (“PGDA”, CTA equivalent) and Bridging course. Responsibilities may also expand to some involvement in the BCom Accounting.
All staff in the department work remotely and therefore, applications from anywhere in South Africa will be accepted.
Some important aspects to take note of, given that our working environment differs from a standard educational institution in a number of ways:
1. Research expectation
This role, along with all our current permanent academic positions, does not carry with it an expectation for the performance of any formal research. Learning and reflecting is an important part of our values, and we seek to apply best practice in all that we do. However, our focus is not on formal research output and, as such, our systems and processes are not designed to either support or reward individuals committed to traditional research.
2. After-hours availability
Our programmes are designed to be flexible and accommodate students who find themselves in a wide range of circumstances, specifically including working students. As a result, we offer our students synchronous, online live sessions after-hours on a weekly basis – these occur between 5:30pm and 6:30pm on weeknights (specifically, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for FREP). Online live sessions only occur during “teaching" weeks and are a maximum of 3 hours per week within these time slots, allocated between team members, meaning that individual team members generally only teach on one evening in a regular week.
Additionally, academic staff members are expected to be available for after-hours online, one-on-one consultations with students for a few (predetermined and allocated between team members) hours each week, either in the evenings or early in the mornings, before working hours. (This after-hours time is included within the normal working hours expected of this position.)
3. Remote working and travel expectations
Our team works entirely online, as our courses are completely online. Therefore, all members of staff are expected to have a stable and reliable source of access to the internet, a backup plan in case of loadshedding and a suitable home office environment. (IT equipment, including a laptop, screen and other essentials, will be provided by Milpark.)
Additionally, the team gathers in person in Cape Town roughly 3 times per year and so members of staff located elsewhere in the country are expected to travel to Cape Town for those meetings, which may require up to three nights away at a time. (The cost of this travel is covered by Milpark.)
