Job Description - Resident Engineer Civil & Structural Works
On behalf of our client, a leading player in the infrastructure and energy sector, we are seeking an experienced Resident Engineer (RE) to oversee and coordinate the on-site execution of civil and structural works for major infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will represent the Engineer (E) within an EPC context, liaising with the Owner’s Engineer and ensuring all works comply with design and specification requirements.
This role requires strong technical oversight, contract administration, quality control, and stakeholder engagement. The RE will also play a mentorship role for junior engineering staff on site.
1. Contract Administration
Ensure full adherence to the terms and intent of the construction contract.
Maintain organized and up-to-date correspondence and documentation files.
Keep detailed records of site activities and ensure progress reports are submitted monthly.
Maintain a register of site-issued drawings and ensure site instruction logs are up to date and signed.
Assist with the preparation of payment certificates and quantity calculations.
Identify and document variations to scope and prepare variation order notes with cost implications.
Understand and interpret design principles and ensure proper implementation on site.
2. Quality and Safety Management
Ensure all works are executed safely and in accordance with design specifications.
Verify that required signage and safety standards are in place on-site.
Oversee contractor setting out and conduct independent checks for accuracy.
Ensure materials testing is conducted and results comply with specifications.
Highlight discrepancies or omissions in construction drawings or documentation to the Engineer.
3. Relationship and Site Management
Act as the Employer’s on-site representative (Site Agent).
Support dispute resolution between Employer and Contractor while maintaining neutrality.
Maintain formal communication channels between Engineer and Contractor.
Promote effective and respectful relationships with all stakeholders.
Ensure all verbal communications are formally documented.
Organize and document regular site meetings.
4. Mentorship and Professional Development
Engage in continuous professional development to maintain ECSA registration.
Mentor and train Assistant Resident Engineers and engineering students assigned to the project.
Requirements
B.Eng or B.Tech in Civil Engineering.
Professionally registered with ECSA (Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng).
Experience & Skills
Minimum of 8 years of experience in civil engineering, with a strong focus on provincial roads and associated structures (stormwater systems, retaining walls, bridges).
Previous exposure to Wind Tower Foundation projects will be an advantage.
Proficient in contract management, construction supervision, and technical reporting.
Strong understanding of local and international engineering standards, statutory, and regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated leadership and project management capability.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to resolve issues proactively and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
