Job Description 

VACANCY: UAS Chief Instructor 

REPORTING TO: ATO Accountable Manager

LOCATION: Mossel Bay

Starlite Aviation Training Academy (Pty) Ltd has a requirement for a highly skilled individual with technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence to fill the position of UAS Chief Instructor. This role will be based in Mossel Bay, South Africa.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the performance and development of all UAS Instructors (ratings, competency etc.) to ensure compliance with aviation regulations, legislation, company policies and procedures and SACAA requirements.
  • Co-ordinate and control UAS training at Starlite Aviation Training Academy (Pty) Ltd and maintain UAS standards and discipline amongst instructors and students.
  • Manage the UAS Instructors to maximise resource utilisation and achieve proficiency among the UAS students.
  • Monitor all UAS instructor's flight and duty times, supervise instructor scheduling and ensure that training files and currencies are maintained for all UAS Instructors and students.
  • Ensure standardization of UAS ground school and instructional techniques amongst all UAS training personnel as well as compliance with SACAA regulations and SACAA syllabi.
  • Overall management of the training delivery in a safe, professional, effective, and efficient manner (course planning and scheduling, UAS instruction, lectures, examinations, administration and course reports, syllabus updates, etc.).
  • Management of all UAS personnel (performance, leave, general admin, etc.), as well as the overall discipline, welfare and morale of Instructors, and students.
  • Ensure that the maintenance provision is conducted in a safe manner.
  • Ensure that each UAS used in providing the air service is airworthy and serviceable in accordance with the manufacturer's user manual and other relevant SA-CATS and SA-CARs.
  • Ensure that all the UAS being operated are insured.
  • Communicate aircraft technical status to relevant management members and staff in a suitable manner to prevent the inadvertent use of unserviceable / unairworthy aircraft.
  • Ensure that each UAS used in providing the air service is airworthy and serviceable for flights.
  • Coordinate daily aircraft maintenance scheduling with the maintenance personnel.
  • Regular contact with the manufacturer to ensure that all applicable aircraft service bulletins and airworthiness directives are complied with.
  • Stop or prohibit any action or operation which could jeopardise the company's personnel, safety record and standards.
  • Stop or prohibit any action or operation that is unsafe or unreliable.

CRITICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficient in oral and written English, with the ability to convey ideas clearly.
  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations and learning styles.
  • Impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching.
  • Proven ability to work with a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Familiar with company policies, TPM, and SACAA regulations.
  • Skilled in administrative tasks related to student management.
  • Contributes to and promotes a climate of multicultural appreciation.
  • Strong focus on attention to detail.
  • Good mechanical aptitude, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, ability to meet rigid deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The following is essential for this position:

  • Holder of a SACAA UAS License with the following ratings:
  • Instructor Rating
  • BVLOS Rating
  • FW Rating
  • Minimum of 3 years' proven experience working in a technical UAS team.
  • Skilled in operating various UAS types in diverse weather, lighting conditions, and both VLOS and BVLOS environments.
  • Extensive knowledge of aviation theory, regulations, standards, and practices.
  • Well experienced in UAS training delivery, including classroom and practical teaching experience.
