Job Description - We are looking for a Junior Legal Advisor in City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality, WC

Job Description

A growing renewable energy and infrastructure company is seeking a bright, commercially minded Junior Legal Advisor to join its legal team in Bellville.

This is a development-focused opportunity for an early-career attorney who wants to build broad corporate and commercial legal experience rather than specialise too narrowly. Working closely with the Head of Legal and senior legal professionals, the successful candidate will receive mentorship and structured development while gaining hands-on exposure to commercial contracting, transactions, legal risk, governance, contract management and potentially renewable energy and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities:

Commercial Contracts & Legal Support

  • Draft and assist with reviewing a broad range of corporate and commercial agreements, including services, supply, procurement, outsourcing, licensing, technology, confidentiality, distribution and agency agreements.

  • Progressively take ownership of standard-form and lower-risk agreements.

  • Conduct legal research and prepare draft legal advice on contractual rights, obligations, liability, warranties, indemnities, termination rights and commercial risk.

  • Provide responsive day-to-day corporate and commercial legal support across different business functions and entities.

  • Identify potential legal risks and escalate material matters appropriately.

Transactions & Projects

  • Support corporate transactions and strategic initiatives, including due diligence, document collation, condition precedent tracking, signature packs and closing checklists.

  • Assist with renewable energy, infrastructure and energy-services transactions where applicable.

  • Support tender, RFP and procurement processes, including first-pass reviews of commercial terms.

  • Assist with issuing notices and responses to claims arising from subcontractor or construction agreements.

Contract Management & Governance

  • Manage the contracting workflow from initial instruction through review, approval, signature and implementation.

  • Maintain legal matter trackers, contract registers and diarised deadlines.

  • Prepare signature packs and ensure executed agreements are correctly filed and recorded.

  • Maintain and version-control the group's legal templates and precedent library.

  • Monitor compliance with contracting policies and delegation of authority requirements.

  • Prepare periodic reporting on legal matters, turnaround times, contract renewals and outstanding items.

Requirements:

  • LLB or equivalent recognised legal qualification.

  • Admitted Attorney in South Africa.

  • 1–3 years post-articles experience within a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal environment.

  • Demonstrated experience drafting and reviewing corporate and commercial agreements.

  • Sound knowledge of South African contract law and the fundamentals of the Companies Act 71 of 2008.

  • Strong academic record.

  • Strong Microsoft Word skills, including tracked changes and document comparison.

  • Experience with contract/document management and electronic signature systems.

  • Exposure to construction law, infrastructure, renewable energy or project development would be advantageous but is not essential.

Key Competencies:

  • Excellent legal drafting and analytical skills.

  • Exceptional attention to detail.

  • Commercially minded with an interest in understanding the wider business.

  • Proactive, organised and comfortable taking ownership of allocated matters.

  • Able to manage multiple matters, priorities and deadlines in a high-volume environment.

  • Strong professional communication and stakeholder-management skills.

  • Able to work effectively under supervision while knowing when to proceed independently and when to escalate.

  • Pragmatic and solutions-oriented approach to legal risk.

  • High levels of professionalism, integrity, discretion and accountability.

  • Eager to learn and receptive to mentorship and feedback.
