Job Description - Workshop Lead (SA)


Company Overview

Alistair Group, one of the fastest growing entities in East and Southern Africa, seeks a Workshop Manager to join its management team. We aim to make industry work better in Africa.  We are an asset-based organization run by a professional and highly experienced team focused on bringing efficiency, execution culture and best practice to our customers’ operations.

Based - New Germany, Kwa-Zulu Natal

Hours - Two Saturdays per month 8am to 12pm / Normal working hours daily

Job Summary

The Workshop Manager is responsible for all the activity in the workshop and activities and responsibilities include the following:

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Make sure that all the machinery and assets are available 100% of the time
  • Managing workshop activity – the Workshop Manager plans, assigns and reviews the work of all mechanics and electricians in the workshop. He briefs the supervisors, who then supervise the work of the mechanics, welders, panel beaters and electricians
  • Managing safety – It is the responsibility of the Workshop Manager to ensure that the workshop is safely maintained, that all working areas are safe and that staff are fully trained to do their job efficiently and safely
  • Managing staff - Evaluating performance of workshop personnel, identifying training needs and recruiting
  • Liaising with other departments – co-ordinate the need for maintenance and repair of operational equipment with other employees at managerial level

Qualifications and Skills

  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic
  • College diploma/certificate in management
  • Good computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Applications, Online fleet management & tracking systems, Sage Pastel and SAP Business One ERP systems

Soft skills

  • A leader, with strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills
  • A working knowledge of motor vehicle parts and basic auto functions is important
  • Over 5 years of experience in workshop operations, of trucks and lifting equipment
  • Energetic, self-motivated & target-oriented, capable of team management & working under pressure
