Job Description - Monitoring and Evaluation Intern

JOB OVERVIEW



The Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Intern position is based in Cape Town within the Southern Africa Medical Unit (SAMU). The intern will work under the supervision of the Senior and Flying M&E Advisors and will support monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities across SAMU-supported projects. The intern will learn through close collaboration with project data managers, epidemiologists, and advisors, gaining practical experience with M&E systems that improve data quality, patient care, program performance, and strategic decision-making in a medical humanitarian context.



KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES


 


1. Support Data Analysis and Reporting



  • Assist with secondary analysis of routinely collected project data

  • Support data cleaning and management (labelling variables, restructuring datasets, basic data checks)

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of analysis plans

  • Prepare descriptive analyses, tables, and summaries for reports and manuscripts

  • Support report writing and documentation of findings


 


2.  Support Routine Project Monitoring and Health Information Systems



  • Assist project teams with routine monitoring of chronic care activities

  • Support the development and updating of data dictionaries, SOPs, and data quality processes

  • Contribute to basic indicator coding and automation of routine analyses

  • Support data migration processes when new data tools are introduced

  • Engage in peer learning and collaboration with project data teams


 


3. Contribute to standard M&E Tools, Indicators, and Dashboards



  • Support the development and adaptation of standard indicators and monitoring tools

  • Assist with the preparation of dashboards and data visualization tools (e,g, DHIS2, Power BI)

  • Contribute to data validation and annual reporting processes for SAMU-supported activities

  • Support the preparation of guidance materials, SOPs, and training resources linked to M&E tools


 


4.  Learning and Professional Development



  • Gain practical experience in monitoring and evaluation within an international humanitarian organization

  • Participate in mentorship, coaching, and on-the-job learning with experienced M&E professionals

  • Attend internal trainings, learning sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities

  • Build professional networks across SAMU, MSF projects, and technical platforms

  • Develop skills in data analysis, reporting, and evidence-based programme support.


 


REQUIREMENTS



Qualifications



  • Currently completing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Demography, Health Information Systems, or a related field (e.g. MPH, MSc)


 


Knowledge & Skills



  • Foundational skills in quantitative data management and basic analysis

  • Interets in monitoring and evaluation and chronic care programmes (HIV, TB, NCDs, Hepatitis)

  • Familiarity or exposure to data and health information systems such as R, REDCap, Kobo, DHIS2, OpenMRS/Bahmni, Metabase, or Power BI

  • Ability to manage tasks independently and meet deadlines

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams



Experience



  • Exposure to public health programmes through coursework, research, volunteer work, or internships is an advantage



Personal attributes



  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn

  • Good organizational and time-management skills

  • Curious, motivated, and proactive approach to learning

  • Ability to work respectfully in diverse, multicultural teams

  • Flexibility and adaptability in remote and evolving work environments



Remuneration and resources:



  • Resources needed such as working space, computer, internet, stationery, and other resources will be made available.

  • Monthly Stipend: R 5000

  • 100% Medical aid

  • Transport allowance

  • Cell Phone allowance


 


Commitment


Length of commitment: 12 months
